Friday, Feb. 7, 1936 LAST RITES FOR PIONEER WOMAN Funeral services were held in the Welch & Griffin chapel last Saturday for Mrs. Anna Louise Heffner, a well-known pioneer resident of this city who passed away at the home at Seventeenth and J streets on Thursday of last week. Following the services, at which the Rev. J. Douglas Ewan officiated, the remains were laid to rest in Evergreen mausoleum. Mrs. Heffner was born in Rolls county, Missouri, September 5, 1848. In 1857 her father James Brown, who had come to California several years before, returned to Missouri to bring his wife and four children west. A short time after leaving St. Joseph on the trip west he was shot and killed while, with other men, he was guarding the wagon train against Indians. The widow and children accompanied the remainder of the party to California, locating first in Markleville and then near Stockton. Anna Brown became the wife of James E. Carter, and for several years the couple resided in the Merced river section near Snelling. After Mr. Carter's death about 50 years ago she came to Merced with her children and in 1891 was married to David L. Heffner, who passed away in 1932. During the greater portion of her residence in Merced the family home was at 255 Seventeenth street, and she was widely known, especially among old-time residents of the community. She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Sarah Carey of Stockton, Mrs. Frank Pebley and Mrs. John Wisdom of Atwater and Mrs. Claracy Trindade of San Francisco, and one son, James E. Carter of Los Angeles. Carter, who had been an invalid for many years, passed away at the County Hospital late last Friday afternoon, and several hours later his step-father, David L. Heffner, passed away in the same institution, his death resulting from hemorrhages after a brief illness. Double funeral services were held in the Welch & griffin chapel Monday, with the Rev. Dennis B. Rickard officiating, and interment was in the Winton cemetery. Mr. Carter was born in Genoa, Nevada, sixty-seven years ago, but had resided in California since boyhood. During his long residence in Merced he was engaged in teaming anf for several years held a contract for transporting the mail to and from the trains and the local Postoffice. Surviving relatives are his widow, Susie Carter, of this city, his mother, Mrs. Annie L. Heffner; a brother, J.E. Carter of Tipton; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Carey of Stockton and Mrs. Ora Pebley and Mrs. May Wisdom of Atwater, and a step-sister, Mrs. Clarice Trindade of San Francisco. Mr. Heffner, who was aged seventy-four years, was a native of Dayton, Ohio. He came to Merced about forty-five years ago to work at his trade as painter and paper-hanger and had resided here continuously since.
