JONES Dies at Home In Stockton Mariposa Gazette, April 27, 1923 (submitted by Tom Hilk ) Greatly beloved lady passed away on Thursday morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mirian GOUCHER of Stockton after long illness. Was County Superintendent of Schools of Mariposa for eighteen years and a prominent member of Las Mariposas Chapter, Order Eastern Star. A telephone message was received by relatives in Mariposa Thursday, telling of the death of Miss Julia L. Jones, that morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mirian GOUCHER of 840 N. Hunter Street, Stockton, California. Miss Jones had been in declining health for many months and her death was not unexpected, although everything was done that medical science and the best physicians could do for her. Julia L. Jones was born at the Benton Mills and was, at the time of her death, 66 years of age. Her family were very prominent people in Mariposa where they resided for many years. Miss Jones was a highly educated and cultured woman and was elected to the office of County Superintendent of Schools of Mariposa in 1894! , and serving in that capacity from January 1, 1895 to march 12, 1912, resigning from office on account of her health and moving to Stockton where she has resided since. She was held in the highest esteem by the teachers, children and parents throughout her long useful term as Superintendent of Schools. Her many acts of kindness and charity will remain as a monument to her memory for years to come. She was a charter member of Las Mariposa Chapter, Order Eastern Star, and was faithful to its teachings in her daily work. And one of her last requests was that she be laid at eternal rest under the solemn rites of the chapter which was so much to her. She also was a N. D. G. W. She leaves to mourn her, two sisters Mrs. Mirian GOUCHER of Stockton and Mrs. Lucy TURNER of White Rock, Mariposa county, and one brother, Newman JONES of Los Angeles. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Saturday, at 2 o'clock p.m., interment to be in the family plot, in the Masonic cemetery at Mariposa, be! side her father and mother who preceded her to the grave many years. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/MASONCEM.html Jones L. MILLER and Miss Lucy S. JONES. The marriage ceremony was performed at the home of the bride, at 8 o'clock P.M., and was private, only a few friends being present. At 9 o'clock Stewart's Hall was filled with an expectant throng, awaiting the bridal party, which soon appeared. The wedding group consisted of the bride and groom, Mr. Newman JONES and Miss Julia JONES, Mr. William STAHL and Miss Josephine MILLER, followed by the parents, and other friends who had witnessed the ceremony. The bride was elegantly attired in white silk, en train, trimmed with satin and lace, and looked handsome and happy. The two bridesmaids wore lovely dresses of white tarleton, and the only thing we can't forgive in them is, why didn't they get married, too, while they looked so sweet and bride-like? A plentiful supply of cake and wine was served to guests by the deft hands of white ! robed maidens, making some of us elderly folks think we were young again. The hall was beautifully decorated with pictures and flowers, the music excellent, everybody good-natured, and altogether it was a most enjoyable affair. Many guests from other towns were present, among them Mr. and Mrs. CHAPMAN, Mr. Tom HARRIS ( of the Merced Star) and his sister Miss Emma; Miss Lizzie BARRETT, of Merced Falls, and many others whose names we cannot recall. Besides our native population turned out unanimously to bid God-speed to our village favorite, Miss Lucy. The brass band furnished some splendid music at different times through the evening. Dancing was kept u till way past the wee hours, and nothing unpleasant marred the festive occasion. The bride received many handsome presents, and we know of no one who more fully deserved them. The happy couple do not leave us, but go at once to housekeeping. May they live to celebrate their diamond wedding, and the light around their domestic ! hearth attract the presence of many ( not moths) but (MILLERS). ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Alexander McELROY September 23, 1882 Mariposa Gazette Death of Alexander McELROY We clip from the Merced Star, of September 21st, the following account of the death of one of Mariposa's pioneer citizens:- " Alexander McELROY, a pioneer settler of Mariposa County, died here on Friday last, and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery, under auspices of the order, on Saturday afternoon. Judge McELROY was esteemed by all his friends and associates, for his decision of character, kindness and sterling integrity. He leaves an aged window, and a daughter, Mrs. Cassida of Hornitos. You don't know me but I am researching my roots and have come across you board. Just so that you know how we are related, Alice PRAIRIE is my great, great, great grandmother. She is the mother of Rose PRAIRIE, who married George Washington JONES, who are the parents to Sadie Mae JONES, who married Tony B. FOURNIER, who are the parents to my grandmother, Iva Rebecca FOURNIER, who married Clarence JAY, who are my father's parents, Charles JAY. I would love any and all information about these relatives. I was born and raised in Mariposa, moving to Santa Rosa, CA about 10 years ago. I'm married and we have 2 boys, Peter, 4 years old and Joey, 16 months. I'm the oldest of 12. I have 5 sisters and 6 brothers. Grandma JAY died about 2 years ago. Anyway, this is more than you wanted to know about me. I know that you are looking for more information about Great Great Great Grandpa Frank and if I find more, I will of course let you know. Right now, what I'm doing is going throu! gh the old census and trying to glean information from there. At one point, grgrgr Grandpa Frank stated he was from Portugal. Anyway, going to try to research that a little more soon. With 2 little boys, my time is pretty limited, but we have fun. I don't know about you , but I just get so jazzed about learning of our ancestors. It makes the pictures come a live and creates a story. If you happen to have any pictures of the PRAIRES, GUAY, etc. I would love a copy of them. I hope that I don't seem too forward or pushy. It's just that it's not often that we find someone who knows something about our ancestors, you know. Oh, how are you related? Also, the email address that is showing is wrong. I'm not sure why it's not changed, but here is my current email address: Sutherlandfamily@northbay.com If you need it for any reason, here is my mailing address also. It's : Debbie Sutherland, 805 Lewis Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95404. Thank you so much Beverly for taking the time and effert to respond to me. I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon.
