Friday, May 23, 1924, front page MEETS DEATH IN AUTO ACCIDENT Mrs. Rose Rowe, is Killed in An Automobile Accident Near Oakdale Mrs. Rose Rowe, for many years a resident of Merced, received injuries which caused her death, and Mrs. J. B. Langley and W. T. Holland, also residents of this city, were less seriously injured in an automobile accident near Oakdale at about 6:30 o'clock Monday evening. With Holland driving, the party was on the way to Sonora to attend a social function of the Knights of Pythias, and when they were about 2 miles west of Oakdale a runaway team hitched to a mowing machine dashed from a side road onto the highway and crashed into the rear of the automobile, overturning the vehicle and pinning the occupants underneath it. The injured persons were taken to Robinson Sanitarium at Modesto for treatment, but Mrs. Rowe passed away before reaching the hospital. Mrs. Langley received a broken collar bone and severe cuts about the face and it was at first thought she was fatally injured, but it is now reported she will recover. Holland escaped with minor cuts and bruises and was able to return to Merced Wednesday. The auto was badly wrecked, and one of the horses was killed. Mrs. Rose Rowe was a native of Columbia, Tuolumne county, and was aged 51 years, 3 months and 7 days. She had been a resident of Merced for many years and was respected and esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who sincerely regret her tragic death. She leaves her husband, J.A. I'll be happy to E-mail you my street address, but I really don't mind listing it here; you see, I think it is important that other family researchers can get a hold of me, if they need to; especially if I should experience some down time, or if I should change servers. I cannot tell you how many times my E-mails have been returned as "undeliverable" after sending a reply to a query on some USGENWEB site! Wow, the links that you posted are great! Why, I even found a record of my GG-Grandpa's mother-in-law, LIDA A. MESSENGER MCCARVER (b. Jan. 8, 1860 in NY); she passed away on Feb. 25, 1943 in Lassen Co., CA, and is buried there in Susanville; this came as a big shock to me since she has a gravestone next to her husband's (no death date is listed) in Scranton Cemetery, Eastland Co., TX! Actually, Lida was the stepmother of GG-Grandpa Lorenzo's wife, LOLA A. MCCARVER RICHARDSON. Lida married Lola's Dad, THOMAS JEFFERSON MCCARVER (b. July 6, 1852 in MS; d. Dec.18, 1927 in TX) on Nov. 21, 1877 in Graham, Young Co., TX -- when Lola was 2 years old. Lola's real mother was also a RICHARDSON, believe it or not! Thank you sooooo much for the info on my maternal GG-grandfather, Lorenzo Dow RICHARDSON. You guys have finally cleared up the question of his correct date of birth & death; you see, I had found a second birth date listed -- March 10th (perhaps that was the date of his christening); I also had 2 different years listed for his death -- 1931 & 32. It's great to finally get that staightened out. But, as I am sure you know, it seems like there will always be a few discrepancies; for instance, the place of birth listed for the parents of Lorenzo Dow RICHARDSON are at odds with what I have collected; the 1880 US Census for Callahan Co., TX, Precinct 7, shows that his father, WILLIAM. D. RICHARDSON was born in Kentucky -- not Virginia; it also shows that his mother, ANGELINA, was born in Virginia -- not Misouri; of cour! se, it is easy to see how "Virginia" was reversed, but as for the "Misouri" reference, I can only speculate. That same census does list the place of birth for their oldest son (the older brother of Lorenzo Dow), ARMANIAS?, as Misouri; perhaps that is where the mix-up came from. Isn't it fun playing detective! Well, it's back to my never ending search for truth, justice & my ancestor's origins. I've heard that Grandpa Lorenzo's wife -- my GG-Grandmother, LOLA A. MCCARVER RICHARDSON (b. 1875 in Breckenridge, Stephens Co., TX; d. 1945?) is buried in the Sacramento, CA area, and that one of their sons -- LeRoy, was also a Minister there. Alma, I really appreciate your help, as well as Tom Hilk's; you Merced Folks are ALL RIGHT! Thanks again, Ben Andrews, TX I

Thanks a million! I'm really not surprised that Leo & his Dad were in that line of business. Back in Central Texas, Lorenzo Dow Richardson -- Leo's Dad, had been taught the Blacksmith trade by his father-in-law, Thomas J. McCarver (b. July 6, 1852 in MS; d. Dec. 18, 1927 in TX); as a matter of fact, according to B.C. Chrisman's book, Early Days of Callahan County, Mr. McCarver constructed a 2 story building in Atwell, TX; the book states that he opened a Blacksmith Shop on the first floor, and it lists his son-in-law, L.D. It's ironic that this should be my GG-Grandpa Richardson's final resting place since back in the 1970s, I passed through there on US Highway 140 at least a dozen times on my way to Yosemite. By the way, is that really cool old train depot in Merced still standing? I always enjoyed checking it out when our bus would make a stop there (I remember that the bus station was located across the street from the Train Depot).
