    1. [CAMerced] pre-1905 weekly update
    2. >Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 19:32:06 -0800 >To: Transcriptionists >From: "Donna@MBS" <mbs@inland.net> >Subject: pre-1905 weekly update > >Hi all; >It's that time again...for another update on our progress. Lots of good things are happening. We have gotten funding for Alameda County from the Livermore - Amador Genealogical Society and they will be helping with transcription although we will be working on it as well. We have also gotten the balance of our funding for San Francisco County from a very generous man in Australia. Also appears as we may be able to trade some info on San Francisco with another genealogical society who has done some we haven't and vice versa. Things are jumpin'. > >We have gotten Lake County and Modoc County out for transcription, Kern County done and soon to be online and naturally much more of San Francisco scheduled to go online as soon as proofing, etc gets done. We have had some questions about Sacramento County getting online, which is in the near future, but we are at the funding stage there and would like to get some of those pending online. We have about a dozen counties where the records are ordered and over 20 counties with over 30 volumes being transcribed right now. We want to get some of those done before we get another big county going (I can't find room for more files on my desk at the moment). Santa Cruz County has been funded as well and other donations toward some of the other counties which are building up their totals to cover costs. All of you have been wonderful with your donations to keep this ball rolling. > >Modoc County was transcribed by a donor an just needs to be set in our template which is happening right now so that should be up rather fast as well. Del Norte County is going out to start transcription too. And, we will be finishing up some of the other batches that have been in transcription for awhile. To put it nicely, we are working on completing some counties to get them online. > >I have to admit that I never dreamed this would move along as rapidly as it has been going. We have been at this for only two and one half months and the progress is phenomenal when you think about it. I couldn't do it without all the donors (over 90) and all the volunteers (well over 100). They are all incredible and really staying on top of all this. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize the response I would get with my first email that said "HELP! HELP! HELP!", way back in the beginning of January. You are all really wonderful and very giving and helpful people out there. All the support is incredible and the "Found" stories keep rolling in. > >To maintain this speed though, I regret to inform you, we cannot do lookups during this process. Several have asked and I have had to turn you down. We are getting them all online as fast as our little ol' fingers will go, so please be patient. > >The website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905> has only been up for less than two months and we have had almost 7000 hits so far, so we must be sparking some interest there. Keep visiting. That is what it is there for. We will keep you updated as new areas are placed on the web. Please note that weekly, the site is updated by Steve (my hero and our computer guru) to keep you informed on the latest completed files as well as the status of all the areas we currently have "under constructions". And to keep our hero happy is our heroine, Laura who keeps all our transcribers "technically" up to snuff. A special thanks to all of you. > >Me...I just organize (or try to) all this hullaballoo, keep the books, order records and help our transcribers when they can't read some of the older, too dark or too light handwriting. You could say I am technically the "non-technical" side of the project. If you would like to help, email me. If you would like to send a donation, send it to me. If you have a question, ask me. I will do what I can or send you in the right direction. > >Soooooo, for now, that is about it. We are working and hopefully, you are enjoying. Till next week..... > >Donna Bradley >Project Coordinator >Pre-1905 Project >P. O. Box 391368 >Anza, CA 92539-1368 >http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 > >

    1. [CAMERCED-L] Pre-1905 weekly update
    2. >Hi all; >Seems that our transcriptionists want San Francisco County done as much as the rest of us. Currently in Transcription is Vol. 1, 2, 3, M, and P is just going out the door. There seems to be much confusion as to what records we are using. Some of them are death registers (just like the other counties) and some of them are Mortuary Registers. The mortuary registers give the same info that the death registers do. All registers are for the "City and County of San Francisco". > >The other counties are moving right along as well. Several more counties have their records ordered and a few more are in transcription. We have some of the smaller counties getting transcribed while we are working on the larger ones. We have gotten book two of Los Angeles County online this week and hope to have more of it online shortly. For an update on what is happening for any given county, take a look at the website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905>. For those counties that are pending donations, look at the donor page and that will tell you which ones are open for sponsorship, funding and support. > >I would like to take a moment to thank the genealogical societies that are supporting us. Santa Barbara is funded and being transcribed by their genealogical society...all we had to do is supply the records for them. The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society is funding and helping with the transcription in the Alameda County records. Those records have been ordered and should be in shortly. The Tehama County Gen. and Hist. Society has offered help in Tehema County and there are several others on the verge of coming through for their counties as well. > >For those of you that are considering volunteering for transcribing, there are a couple things that need to be understood. These records are over 100 years old and not always the easiest to read. They are hand written and some of them are in the older style of writing. This makes them more difficult. Also, some of the records don't copy really well. We do the best we can with what we have to make it easier. This is definitely a "Labor of Love" and those that are working on these deserve and extra pat on the back for what they are doing. Because some of the people have expected something simple to do, we have sent out some batches and then never heard from the volunteers again. If you volunteer and discover that you cannot follow through, this is not a problem, but please send the copies back to us as there are additional costs entailed in recopying the records. This can be saved. > >This is not to discourage those that wish to volunteer, but to educate them on what to expect. We have back up for what you cannot read and we help whenever we can or whenever you seem to be having a problem. Right now...we are lucky as some of the records (like the ones we are distributing right now) are extremely easy to read and transcribe. > >A special thanks goes to Steve Melton...our computer wiz, who has managed to stay on top of all the technical dealings with getting this online. He keeps the site updated weekly with periodic changes during the middle of that week. Steve, we love you and you are wonderful. > >Laura Melton, Steve's wife, has been keeping everything organized and sending out templates and instructions to all the new transcribers, as well as dealing with some of the other technical problems that have come up. In between reunions, baby showers and the like, we have managed to keep her pretty busy as well. Thank you Laura for all you do...which is way too much to even start to mention here. > >For all those that have helped to support this project, in addition to listing all of you on the donor page, I would like to say an additional "THANK YOU". Without you, this project could not come about. Between copies and postage, it is amazing how rapidly the costs add up. Donations can be sent to me. Full accountings are kept of all costs and income to the project. > >Well, will keep you updated on the new additions to the website as they come along. Thank you all for the good words, support and help. Till next week... > >Donna Bradley >Project Coordinator >P. O. Box 391368 >Anza, CA 92539-1368 > > >
