I believe it was a museum I visited you had to go up a lot of steps. Anyway it was in the MERCED SUN-STAR. She made headlines on March 28, 29 and front page on the 30th. At first they said it was an accident than a grand jury was called upon and referred to it as a possible murder. I couldn't find any results oif the grand jury. It also said she was a singer but I never knew that I was told a waitress. It's all very baffling to me. Helen

    2. Ralph, The San Joaquin Valley Argus 1870--1890 was the only newspaper that covered Merced area in that time period. I can check next week for Addison Ostrander. I called Sarah at the Merced Courthouse Museum, explaining I was looking for any records from the Co. I didn't call Ivers and Alcorn, I'm sure there records would only contain a copy of the death cert and information pertaining to her funeral.. The newspaper article dated March 28, 1939 suggests the sheriff thought it could be murder related. I was only there a weekend and wanted to cover as much ground as possible so didn't go much farther in the newspaper files. I did go to the Funeral Home, Ivers and Alcorn. A nice gentleman, small with a hunch back, helped me. He was looking for Eberhardt when in fact her name was Myers. When he reread the newspaper and found the name Myers he said he was too small and couldn't reach the files so he would send some one else to look. It took a women no more than five minutes to come and tell me she couldn't find anything. I did rewrite them after my return, and enclosed a self addressed envelope with no reply. Yes I know, the Historical Society was nice and explained their difficulty and did say records I needed were probaly in storage with no help to find them for me. Yes I know this is a long shot but no one in the family ever talked about my Mother or anything actually. I just feel I need to know.

Surnames: COYLE, LONGMIRE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VW.2ADE/974.1.1 Message Board Post: Alma, Thank you so much for your fast work! Reuben is on the 1870 census in both Merced Co. (with "Mad Longmire") and also in Stanislaus Co. (with his children who returned home to Oregon). In 1880, he is in Merced Co. with wife "Magden" and her daughter Sarah Longmire. Then in 1900 "Madura Coyle" is a widow in Merced Co. Thus I am presuming too that they were married between 1870 and 1880 but am unsure as to what county. No one I can find knows when or where he died other than the rumor that he died in central California. I did find a book that said he died in January 1888 but what county I don't know and I don't know if that's correct or not. I'm hoping perhaps Merced or Stanislaus counties or at least that's a start. I'm glad you were able to find Madura. I've looked in the AOL yellow pages and is that Turlock Memorial Park? I was hoping that Reuben would be where ever she was. Oh well. This morning I asked for a look-up for DCT and obit on Madura in Stanislaus and whether there was one for Reuben in Merced or Stanislaus. That's a good idea to try to find one on Sylvester too. However I posted it on the NORCAL mailing list which was probably the wrong place? Guess I'll give it some time and then try the link you gave me if I don't hear anything. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help! It's hard to ask for look-ups when I can't do anything for you in return. But many thanks and will hear from you next week if you find anything else as you said. Erika

Have you checked the Funeral Home that handled the arraignments ?, I've found them to be a good source of info, especially if the death was suspicious in nature. Searching for information that far back is difficult, most records are stored, destroyed or lost. The Historical Society is a great group they simply don't have enough man power or room for all the records they have. She's listed as Mad Longmire in the 1870 census in the household of R.C. Coyle...so if they married it had to be between 1870-1880... I can check for a marriage record on these two...also check to see if he has a death cert on file at the recorders office. I called Merced Dist., Evergreen Memorial, Winton Dist., and Turlock Cemetery's, found Madura in the latter..but no Rueben or Sylvester. Have you tried to find obit's on Madura & Sylvester? they may give you some clues on Rueben. Many thanks for all that you did find. It really helps a lot... even if it raises several more questions. But, that's one of the rules of genealogy. The different spellings of the names are something I've found a lot of, from the DC's, birth records, Census; all of those names appear variously from time to time, and not always chronologically but whimsically. It makes for a very interesting family story. What's REALLY interesting is that this was a very close-knit family group, with couples divorcing and re-marrying each other's brothers and sisters.

    1. [CAMerced] Senate Bill 2039 - OPPOSE the destruction of two historic cemeteries
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Dear Senator Fitzgerald: As you know, Senate Bill 2039 for approval to expand O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, will also approve the destruction of two historic cemeteries known as St. John' Church Cemetery and the Methodist cemetery known as Rest Haven. I applaud your efforts to help save these places of eternal rest from the horrendous task of relocation that will disrupt that rest. I am a resident of California. My family came here in 1850 with the Gold Rush. They came here from Illinois. California also seems to believe that eternal rest is not truly eternal for, in the past several years, many cemeteries have been destroyed or adversely impacted by projects of modern devise. Much of the nation, as a whole, seems to be experiencing the same dilemma, as is apparent by emails and postings to the internet. In 1961, the California Appellate Court ruled against the Superior Court, the California Dept. of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration in their efforts to approve the eminent domain taking of a portion of Eden Memorial Park Cemetery for the construction of the Santa Monica freeway in Los Angeles County. The Court ruled that a highway served no better public purpose than a cemetery. I would opine the same should apply to the expansion of the airport. On September 11th, 2001, the families of over 2,800 people lost loved ones in the worst attack the nation has ever known. Those families, Senator Fitzgerald, will never have a grave to visit to help them through their loss. In years to come, those families cannot take the next generation of their family to visit grandparents those children will never know. September 11th stole more than just their lives. It stole the tangible evidence of their very existence. That, Senator Fitzgerald, is what cemeteries are all about. Cemeteries are not just for the dead. They are for the living; so that we may always have a place to visit, to "talk" with our deceased loved ones, to share our happiness and our sorrows, and to continue the memories of those who have been lost to us. Senate Bill 2039, will not only cause the destruction of St. John's and Rest Haven, but will cause untold emotional anguish for the many living descendants of those persons now buried there. I would encourage you to continue your discourse regarding the adversity this expansion plan will thrust upon the dead and the living. This nation cannot continue to thrust aside the last homes of our nation's pioneering citizenry as if their value is less in death than it was in life. Respectfully, Sue Silver, President El Dorado County Pioneer Cemeteries Commission a California 501(3)(c) Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation 2551 Deer Trail Lane Cameron Park, CA 95682 (530) 676-2889 Email: ssilver1951@jps.net Member, California Historic Cemetery Alliance Sexton, El Dorado Cemetery (est. 1849), El Dorado Co., California
