Surnames: Smith Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UW.2ADE/1900 Message Board Post: Point Arena Record Point Arena, CA November 9, 1900 William Smith, a stranger in this place and whose peculiar actions attracted much attention and made many think he was demented, committed suicide at Irish Gulch on Tuesday by jumping off the bridge to the rocks below - a distance of about 60 feet. He arrived here on the steamer Point Arena on Tuesday morning and started to walk to Greenwood, getting as far as the Irish Gulch bridge, where he removed part of his clothing and jumped, the fall killing him almost instantly. He had tax receipts in his clothing of this county and signed by J. J. Morrow, of Fort Bragg, and $6 in cash. Acting Coroner Ainslie brought the body which was discovered by Joe Walsh, to town that evening and an inquest was held the following day. The jury's verdict was suicide. Mr. Griffith took charge of the remains and the funeral took place at the Odd Fellow's cemetery yesterday. He was a young man about 25 or 30, dark complected and had a small black mustache.
