Funeral services were conducted at the home on Wednesday by Rev. George Proctor, pastor of the Presbyterian church, of which Mrs. Caughey had been a member for many years. The beautiful surroundings of the "Old Home", protected by the lofty hills of Mal Pass, which she loved so well, was justly befitting the circumstances, for it was here, that no friend or stranger ever went away, feeling that she or he had not been welcome. Many friends gathered for the services and accompanied the remains to the Evergreen Cemetery, where she was laid away among a bower of flowers. Mary Jane Munroe was the daughter of the late William and Grace Ann Munroe, and was born in Kemptville, Canada. Early in the year 1866 she came with her parents to California. In 1868 she moved with them to Manchester, where she has since resided. On November 24, 1869, she was united in marriage to the late John Dugall Caughey, and seven children were born to this union, four of whom survive her: Chester, Leslie, Minnie, and Mrs. Agnes Fairbanks. She was loving mother to Mrs. Grace Betts, a grandson, Leroy Caughey, and two sisters, Mrs. Barbara McPhail of Berekeley and Mrs. Catharene Burgess of San Leandro, and many nephews and nieces are left to mourn her passing. This kindly lady was "Mama Caughey" or "Aunt Mary" to all in the community. She was ever ready to lend a helping hand in time of sickness or sorrow, always thinking of the welfare of neighbors and friends, and a most devoted mother. The many beautiful floral offerings and the love and kindness shown spoke of the high esteem in which this dear lady was held.
