My great great grandmother was either a full or half-sister of Batchicka. Her name was "Sooney" Youngcault, but she became Nancy Jane Gardner and married here in California. She came across the plains in 1848 with her brother-in-law Caleb and a number of cousins, his and Batchicka's kids. Her mother died when she was young, and she lived with Batchicka until Batchicka died, then she lived with another woman back there until coming over. She was described as being able to speak French and "Indian" well, though I don't know if the Indian was spoken or sign language. Our family stories say she spoke to the local tribal members on the California coast, but I don't know whether this was verbal or sign. She, and Batchicka I believe as well, were only 1/2 Crow as far as we know. They were about 10-15 years apart in age, so I suspect the father that our family has said was a French(Canadian) fur trapper might well have had two wives over this timeframe.
