C. Terwilliger Called By Death Newton C. Terwilliger, a prominent citizen of the northern part of the county, died at the Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital last Saturday noon after a brief illness. Mr. Terwilliger was taken ill Thursday and on Friday his condition became so serious that he was brought to the hospital by his son, N. W. Terwilliger. He grew worse, and while an operation was considered he was too sick to stand the strain and at noon the next day he passed away. The funeral was held from the Anker & Cleland chapel Tuesday morning under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of Willits. Newton C. Terwilliger was born at Circleville, Ohio, November 25, 1865. He spent his youth and early manhood on his father's farm near that place. In 1887 he came west to San Francisco, but soon removed to Fresno. He was engaged in various business enterprises in Fresno, Tulare and Visalia for a number of years, later returning to San Francisco to go into business. After the fire of 1906 he sold his business and engaged in real estate and insurance. In the fall of 1910 Mr. Terwilliger came to Mendocino county to take charge of the Rancho Primero for the Western Live Stock Company. After two and one-half years he resigned to take up his residence on the homestead he had acquired at the junction of the Grapevine and Rattlesnake creeks where he made a service station and store in conjunction with his insurance and real estate business. This he operated with his son, N. W. Terwilliger, who is the only surviving relative in Mendocino county. Mr. Terwilliger was a Mason for many years, a pleasant gentleman and a public spirited citizen who will be missed in his community.
