SMALLEY, ANDERSON PIONEER, STRICKEN BY DEATH Illness Of Many Months Is Fatal--Early Settler Laid To Rest (Press Special Services.) BOONVILLE, June 1. -- John J. Smalley, an old time resident of Anderson valley, passed away at his home in Cloverdale last Monday evening at the ripe old age of 74 and the funeral was held in the Orange City yesterday. John J. Smalley was born in Stormville, Dutchess County, New York, August 12, 1842. He came to California in 1868, and settled in Anderson Valley. He was married to Ethel Ball, daughter of J. D. and Melissa Ball of Anderson Valley, in 1871. Three children, Jefferson D. Smalley of Cloverdale, Mrs. Millie Martin of Napa, and Jessie J. Smalley of Briceland, Humboldt County, survive their father, besides a loving wife, to whom is extended heartfelt sympathy by their many friends. Mr. Smalley moved to Cloverdale in November 1909, and engaged in the retail lumber business until his failing health necessitated his retirement from active life. He had been in poor health for about four years, and during the past year at intervals of weeks had been confined to the house. Three weeks ago he gave up the battle to stay the ravages of failing strength, and passed to the great beyond at 10:10 o'clock Monday evening. Ukiah Times Ukiah, Mendocino Co., CA Wednesday, June 7, 1916 ANOTHER OLD-TIMER CROSSES THE DIVIDE JOHN J. SMALLEY, WELL-KNOWN PIONEER DIES AT THE AGE OF 74 YEARS John J. Smalley was born in Stormville, Dutchess county, New York, August 12, 1842. He came to California in 1868, and settled in Anderson valley, Mendocino county. He was married to Ethel Ball, daughter of J. D. Melissa Ball, of Anderson valley in 1871. Three children, Jefferson B. Smalley of Cloverdale, Mrs. Millie Martin, of Napa and Jessie J. Mr. Smalley moved to Cloverdale in November 1909 and engaged in the retail lumber business until his failing health necessitated his retirement from active life. He had been in poor health for about four years, and during the past year at intervals of weeks had been confined to the home. Three weeks ago he gave up the battle to stay the ravages of failing strength, and passed away to the great beyond at 10:10 o'clock p.m. Monday, May 29. All that a true, loving wife, and loyal son and daughter could do, was administered to his wants in the last hours of life. John Smalley was born to be the leader of men, but deprived of an education and the requisite training, as thousands had the misfortune to be, born in days when schooling was hard to obtain, his energies in life were, in a measure, misdirected. Devoting himself to farming and stock raising he accumulated a fair share of worldly wealth, and has left a heritage to those that knew him that is priceless. For tenacity of pur! pose and an indomitable will power Mr. Smalley had few equals. To friends he was ever kind and true. May his soul rest in the sweet repose that is due an honest purpose, will be the refrain of hundreds who respect him and will regret his loss. The following resolutions were adopted by a unanimous vote of the Board of Education of Mendocino County, January 1, 1912. Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to remove from us our former School Superintendent and associated, J. F. Barbee, and, Whereas, J. F. The interment took place in the Sunset View cemetery. In honor of the one who had so faithfully served the people of Mendocino county as Superintendent of the schools, the flag on the court house was drawn to half mast when the word of Mr. Barbee's death was received at Ukiah.
