    1. Obituary - Elizabeth (Lizzie) Mitchell (Hughes) Perkins (1847-1924)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hughes, Perkins Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UW.2ADE/1725 Message Board Post: Ukiah Republican Press Wednesday, July 23, 1924 END CAME FOR PIONEER LADY FRIDAY NIGHT Member of First Ukiah Family Of Settlers--Was Ill Long FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY Crossed Plains With Famous Father Of Hangtown Days Ending an illness which extended over almost a year and having been a partial invalid ever since she was injured by a fall into a pole hole on the streets of Ukiah a number of years ago, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Perkins, shortly after midnight Friday passed away peacefully at her home on North Bush street. Came In The Long Ago. With the death of Mrs. Perkins a member of what history probably will confirm was one of the first permanent white family of settlers in Ukiah, has departed. Mrs. Perkins was born in a famous county in Missouri--Pike county, March 4, 1847. With her family deceased came across the plains by ox-team in the early fifties, likely, the record will show, 1852. Twice while coming across the plains the wagon-train was encircled by Indians, but, through the use of tact and the giving of presents to the Indians, together with protestations of friendship, conflict and possible massacre were averted. Settled In Gold Camp. Reaching California the family settled in what is now Eldorado and Placer counties where James Harrison Hughes, Mrs. Perkins father, was selected town marshal. In those days Placerville was known as Hangtown, because of the lawlessness prevailing there. From Placerville the family came to Ukiah reaching here before there were any permanent white settlers. The A. T. Perkins family may have been the first white settlers in the Ukiah valley, but they remained only a short time, going to the coast from here. Leaves Two Sons. Mrs. Perkins was married in October, 1872, to F. L. Perkins and from that union there were born three children, F. L. Perkins and Dr. M. L. Perkins, of San Francisco, and a daughter, Pearl, who died several years ago, in April 1921. Mr. Perkins died in this city, his remains resting in the family burial plot in the local cemetery. Ill Several Months. About six months ago Mrs. Perkins began to fail rapidly and at that time a nurse, Mrs. John Eglin, was brought here to take care of the sick lady. Both sons are engaged in business in San Francisco, but they came here frequently to be with their mother. At the time of Mrs. Perkins' passing F. L. Perkins was in San Francisco, while Dr. Perkins was in a remote section of Lake county, and delay in getting word to them made it impossible for the sons to reach Ukiah in time for the sons to see their mother alive. Both got to the city several hours after Mrs. Perkins passed away. A Strict Church Woman. Mrs. Perkins was a deeply religious woman and a strict attendant at the church to which she belonged--the Seventh Day Adventists. In fact Mrs. Perkins was the first woman of another faith to be taken in as an accepted member of that congregation in Ukiah, and faithfully she followed her adopted religion. Loved Others and Was Loved. Deceased was a generous, Christian soul. Always of a kindly disposition and never complaining. Mrs. Perkins went through life in an unostentatious way and as she lived she tried to make the surroundings of others brighter. The friends she made she held and with the little children she was a great favorite. Buried On Sunday. Sunday afternoon the funeral of Mrs. Perkins was held from the Adventist church, the sermon being preached by Elder Young. The high esteem Mrs. Perkins was held in was manifested by the lovely floral tributes which came from many places, sent by sorrowing friends. Funeral Was Large. The full choir of the Presbyterian church sang at the funeral and Miss Marian Handy acted as organist. The pallbearers were C. M. Mannon, Peter Rudd, Lee Cunningham, Elder Starr, A. R. Stiert and John Neston. Burial was in the Ukiah cemetery and many friends of the respected pioneer woman followed the cortege to the last resting place. Dispatch Democrat Friday, July 25, 1924 ELIZABETH M. PERKINS ANSWERS DEATH'S CALL Deceased Was Member of One of California's Pioneer Families Mrs. Elizabeth M. Perkins, widow of the late Frank L. Perkins, passed ,away last Friday night at her home in this city, death ending an illness of about a year. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Adventist church, and a large concourse of friends were in attendance to show their respect for the memory of the deceased. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful and attested the love and regard with which Mrs. Perkins was held by all who knew her. Elizabeth M. Hughes was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Hughes and crossed the plains with her parents by ox team in the early fifties. She was a native of Pike county, Missouri, where she was born March 4, 1847. Reaching California, her father settled at Hangtown, now Placerville, where he was elected as town marshal shortly after his arrival. From there he came to Ukiah and in October, 1872, she was married to Frank L. Perkins. Three children were born to the union, F. L. Perkins, M. L. Perkins, both of San Francisco, and Pearl, the latter having died several years ago. Mr. Perkins passed away in April, 1921. Son twenty years ago, Mrs. Perkins had the misfortune to step into a hole that had been dug for a telephone pole, and received injures from which she never recovered and which made her a partial invalid. Added to this her general health began to fail about a year ago and for the past six months she had been practically bedridden. Mrs. Perkins was a woman devoutly religious and her Christian life and many acts of kindness and charity had endeared her to all who knew her. In her death the community suffers a great loss and the sincerest sympathy of all is extended the sons and the other relatives. PERKINS DIED SUDDENLY Member of A Pioneer Ukiah Family Is Heart Victim Many were saddened at news reaching here from San Francisco Thursday stating Dr. Mervin L. Perkins had passed away in San Francisco that day. He Loved Ukiah. Never a year went by but Dr. Perkins and family came to Ukiah Memorial day to decorate the graves of Dr. Perkins' pioneer mother and father. Dr. Perkins had a warm spot in his heart for Ukiah and, whenever he could get away from his city duties, motored here to meet old friends. Had Heart Attack. From data, probably obtained from Dr. Perkins' brother, F. L. Perkins, who is employed on The Press-Democrat, Santa Rosa, this life story of Dr. Perkins is obtained from that newspaper: Death struck in the midst of a wedding party at a fashionable San Francisco hotel Thursday when Dr. Mervyn L. Perkins, a brother of Frank L. Perkins of Santa Rosa, and widely known here, succumbed to a heart attack. Of Pioneer Stock. He was a member of the pioneer Perkins family of Ukiah, his grandfather, A. T. Perkins, having taken the first white family of permanent settlers into the Ukiah valley. Perkins street, the main east-west thoroughfare of Ukiah, is named after this pioneer. Leave Wife and Son. Dr. Perkins, a dentist, was a guest at the wedding party honoring Mr. and Mrs. William Homer, who is a member of The Press Democrat editorial department. Dr. Perkins is survived by his widow, Alice, and an 11-year-old son, Morgan Lee. Mrs. Perkins is the former Alice Morgan, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Morgan, of San Francisco. Long A Dentist. Dr. Perkins was 54 years old and a graduate of the University of California Dental College. He began practice in San Francisco in 1914 and throughout his entire professional career had been associated with Dr. Jean Richert. For two decades they conducted offices at Twenty-second and Mission streets, but a few years ago moved to the Flood Building, Market street. Dr. Perkins had gained an extensive reputation as a jaw-operation specialist. Prominent In Masonry. He was a Thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Knights Templar and Islam Temple of the Shrine, San Francisco. Was Not Ailing. Dr. Perkins had been in excellent health and members of his family had no warning of the fatal attack. Following an examination some time ago, doctors had pronounced him in perfect physical condition. Cousin of Postmaster. Dr. Perkins was a cousin of Postmaster E. P. Thurston, of Ukiah. 1. Francis James Perkins (1848-1921)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hughes, Perkins, Scott, Stewart, Thurston Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UW.2ADE/1723 Message Board Post: Dispatch Democrat Ukiah, Mendocino Co., CA Friday, April 15, 1921 DEATH CALLS F. J. PERKINS Pioneer of Pioneers Crosses Last Divide. Was Member of First White Family in Ukiah In the death of Frank Perkins, which occurred last Saturday morning at 1:35, Ukiah lost one of her oldest pioneers and the community one of its most esteemed citizens. Francis James Perkins was born near Littlerock, Arkansas October 26, 1848. In 1854 his father, A. T. Perkins, moved to California with his family, crossing the plains with an emigrant party by means of ox-teams. The family settled first at what is now Wheatland, then moved to the site of the present town of Marysville. In the winter of 1856 and 1857 they moved again, coming to Ukiah, where they arrived in April 1857. At that time a settler names Samuel Lowry had build a log cabin at the corner of what is now Main and Perkins streets in the rear of the Hotel Cecille, and had preempted 160 acres, comprising a large part of the present townsite of Ukiah. A. T. Perkins purchased this preemption and his family thus became the first white settlers of Ukiah township. While engaged in the blacksmith business the elder Perkins entered into various civic and business enterprises. He and John Burton, who afterward became the first county assessor, started the first store in 1858, and in 1859 he took a prominent part in the election in which Ukiah was made the county seat in a contest in which Calpella ran it a close second. Perkins also founded the first Democratic newspaper, which started in 1863 with Wm. Holden as editor. This paper, known as the Constitutional Democrat, became merged latter with the forerunner of the present Dispatch-Democrat. Frank Perkins, as a young man, worked in his fathers blacksmith shop and also taught school for some time, and was more or less identified with his father's activities. About 1885 he entered business for himself as a painter and decorator. He was married October 22, 1872, to Miss Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of James Hughes, another pioneer. After entering the painting business he contracted a bad case of lead poisoning. As a result of this attack he subsequently suffered various attacks of sickness, which sapped his vitality and left him in a weakened condition organically, and an easy prey to uremic poisoning, the malady which caused his death. His final illness began April 3, while he was on a fishing trip to the Comptche section with his son, F. L. Perkins. His condition rapidly became alarming and he was rushed back to this city and put to bed at home and a physician summoned. He remained in a comatose condition until Wednesday evening, when he recovered consciousness and seemed to be rallying. Friday morning, however, he passed into unconsciousness again and death came to him while in that condition, as to one who slept, and without pain or struggle. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Seventh Day Adventist church, an impressive tribute being paid to his life and character by the pastor, Rev. J. R. Dieffenbacher. Interment was in the family plot in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. A large number of friends were in attendance to pay respect to his memory, and the flora tributes were among the most numerous and beautiful ever seen in Ukiah, many being sent and brought by San Francisco friends. Music was furnished by Messrs. P. H. Joseph, Will Van Dyke, Rob Thomas and Geo. C. Dowlen, with Mrs. Roberd Thomas as organist. The pall bearers were Judge J. M. Mannon, E. B. Gibson, R. L. Cleveland, Roscoe Bowen, Peter Rudd and John Nesten. Among those from abroad who attended the funeral were Dr. Richert and wife, and Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Morgan, of San Francisco. The near relatives who survive are the widow, two sons, Francis Leroy and Dr. Mervyn Perkins, both of San Francisco, and three sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Perkins, Mrs. C. V. Scott, both of Ukiah, and Mrs. Frank Stewart, of San Diego. Ukiah Republican Press Ukiah, Mendocino Co., CA Friday, April 15, 1921 FRANCIS J. PERKINS BURIED LAST SUNDAY Frank J. Perkins died Saturday morning last and with is passing one of the oldest and most respected pioneers of the Ukiah section went to his final reward. Was Born In South Francis James Perkins was a native of Arkansas, having been born in Little Rock, October 26, 1848. Six years later Mr. Perkins' father moved to California with his family, being a member of a party of argonauts who made their way to the Golden West by ox team. The Perkins family settled at what is now known as Wheatland, later going to the present site of Marysville. In the winter of 1856-7 they again moved, this time coming to Ukiah, arriving here in April 1857. Samuel Lowry had just built a log cabin at the corner of what today is Main and Perkins street-in the rear of the Hotel Cecille and pre-empted a claim of 160 acres, taking in a large portion of what now is Ukiah, proper. A. T. Perkins bought this claim and he and his family thus became the first permanent white settlers of the township. Mr. Perkins, Sr. opened a blacksmith shop and engaged in other enterprises of a public nature from the start. In 1858 he and John Burton who was the first assessor of the county; started a store and in the same year, together with John R. Short, built the first school house and donated it to the public. It stood just south of Perkins and west of State streets. First Newspaper Founded Mr. Perkins also founded the first Democratic newspaper, which started in 1863 with Wm. Holden as editor. This paper, known as the Constitutional Democrat, became merged later with the present Dispatch-Democrat. After entering the painting business Mr. Perkins contracted a severe case of lead poisoning, and never entirely recovered from it, having been practically an invalid for years. It was uremia, induced by a weakened organic condition remaining after the lead poisoning that caused death. Fetzer of Redwood Valley died early yesterday morning in Hopland at the home of his eldest son. He was 61. The cause of death has not been verified, but a winery spokesperson said Fetzer apparently succumbed to a heart attack. Founder and president of the winery and vineyard in Redwood Valley that bore his name, Fetzer was considered by everyone in the industry, a creative marketer, a hard-working family man and a vintner with a vision. Born in Nebraska, Fetzer came to Mendocino County from Oregon in 1954. Lumber was his primary occupation in those years. He was employed in succession by Hollow Tree Lumber, Al thrasher and finally Masonite, where he was general manager of their western operations from 1970 until 1975. But all along he was thinking about grapes and wine. He began the large family winery with the purchase of 750 acres in Redwood Valley in 1957, 70 of them in old vines long since replanted. Settling in with his wife Kathleen, Barney began planning the cultivation of both family and soil. The family included 11 children, all raised in the fields and taught the "Three P's" (picking, planning and pruning). As the family grew, Fetzer continued expanding his Redwood Valley acreage. The Fetzer's literally built their own winery from foundation up, beginning in 1968. Always a family operation, Fetzer Vineyards has become one of Mendocino County's most respected wineries. A listing of the awards won by Fetzer wines would fill pages. Golds, Silvers and bronzes have been earned by Fetzer vintages in nearly every category entered, from the Los Angeles and Orange County fairs to the Maitres des Tastevins International. Unusual approaches and brilliant thinking enabled Barney Fetzer to pilot his winery into a position of power and respect throughout the wine world. Unilaterally Fetzer was viewed with the respect befitting a man of sharp business skills and over-whelming vision. "Barney was a very close personal friend of mine. I knew him long before he went into the business," reflected Augie Solomon of Calpella, a representative of Cresta Blanca Winery with 45 years of grape involvement. "I remember when he started with just a little crusher and some vines. He and his family built up that business from scratch. They have done a tremendous job. "I just can't say enough about him and what he has accomplished," Solomon continued. "Barney was simply one of the greatest contributors to Mendocino County in the wine market. "He was a great man," the longtime friend said with great emotion. "I just cannot find words enough to praise him." Ulysses Lolonis, a teacher at the Redwood Valley Middle School, owns 175 acres of grapes planted by his father. "I knew Barney ever since he moved here and bought the Smith Ranch. We already had grapes and I remember Barney talking with my dad and gathering advice," Lolonis said. "I have commented often about this--Fetzer was a shrewd and knowledgeable a businessman as I have ever met. He has been a tremendous boost to growers in both Lake and Mendocino counties. He was involved in every aspect of the winery operation and managed to produce a very high-quality product for a very modest price. "He was more than fortunate to have the full support and involvement of his family," Lolonis remembered fondly. "It is a real rarity to involve the family to the extent that Barney did. He achieved a unique participation." Lolonis was among several vineyards whose name appeared on the label of Fetzer wines. Barney Fetzer was very committed to preserving the individual identity of each vineyard lot. He bottled and marketed special quality grape lots under the name of the vineyard that produced them. This meant the time and expense of crushing, pressing and fermenting the harvest of various growers separately, but Fetzer felt it was worth the extra effort. "I am not sure if Fetzer was the first to identify the grower on the label or not, but we benefited tremendously from the recognition," Lolonis conceded, "and so did several other area wineries." Another one of Fetzer's visions was the revitalization of Hopland, mostly realized in his lifetime. Since Fetzer crews began working in the tiny town about 12 miles south of Ukiah, Hopland has been attracting new businesses and tourists in great numbers. Fetzer opened a small wine tasting room alongside Highway 101 in Hopland a few years ago, but have since completely remodeled the old Hopland High School — abandoned for years — and are presently applying the finishing touches to the gymnasium next door. The gorgeous grounds and lavishly restored interior speak well of Fetzer presence in the town. "I have worked for Fetzer for about five years," said Patrick Healy of Redwood Valley, the manager of the Hopland tasting room. "He was a charming person, a vital force. He moved the business along tremendously, just look at what he has done here in Hopland. I have great respect for Barney Fetzer." Besides being a successful businessman, Fetzer is remembered both as a community leader and supporter. "Fetzer Vineyards has always been especially supportive of community groups," said Don Eller, head of the Ukiah Community Center. "It would be hard to find a person who cared more about their community." Surprisingly, the founder of Fetzer Vineyards kept out of politics and rarely used his influence to benefit any cause. "I didn't know him personally, but he did appear before the board on a few occasions," Supervisor Jim Eddie confided last night. "His death was a severe shock to all of us on the Board. "Barney Fetzer worked hard and well within this community. Fetzer (Vineyards) exemplified the strong kind of family business that succeeded because of good management and planning, hard work and intelligence. "He was a fine man and a great success," Eddie concluded. "He was very much admired and will be well remembered." Mendocino County Agriculture Commissioner Ted Eriksen had nothing but praise for the Redwood Valley winery wizard. "Barney was an all-around great guy. An innovator. He put the winery together himself and made it work. "He did a fabulous job for grapes in this county," Eriksen continued. "He was such an imaginative individual. I just can't say enough good about the man. He made his winery and vineyard a very big part of the agriculture in this county. He has done a tremendous job." But the greatest praise may have come from Ukiah's Charley Barra, who, as the chairman of the board of Souverain Vineyards was a competitor — yet he remembered Fetzer as a dear friend. "I have known Barney since 1955," Barra recalled, "in fact I was operator of the ranch in Redwood Valley before he bought it. We have worked very closely over the years. "He made remarkable progress in a very short period of time. His achievements in the industry have been spectacular — truly spectacular. He was always confident about his work and enthusiastic. And he always had great support from his family. "The industry has been in awe of his abilities," Barra said. "He is considerably well respected within the inindustry as an achiever of goals. There have been few people who have achieved what he has in such a short period of time. "He was a wonderful man and a great businessman," Barra commented. "He never exploited the industry, he was always a contributor. He was a great promoter of the area, always a doer rather than a talker." Anthony Das Blue, syndicated wine columnist and editor of Bon Appetit magazine also spoke warmly of the Redwood Valley vintner and his outstanding wines. "I first met Barney in New York at a wine tasting event," Blue recalled. "Fetzer wines were already big in New York in the 70's. Especially their Premium Red. It was low-priced and high-quality, about the best on the market. It was the hottest thing on the East Side in those days. "Fetzer showed you could make a top quality wine at a reasonable price. Aside from being a wonderful guy, he was very important from the industry point of view for this reason. I feel that he should be a role model for the entire industry. "There are about 400 wineries, but of all of them Fetzer stood out. The man was more than important, he was very likeable," said Blue. "He built something genuinely wonderful, a dynasty." Fetzer, a veteran of Merchant Marine service during World War II, is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and children John, Joseph, James, Robert, Richard, Daniel, Patricia and Diane Fetzer, Kathleen White, Mary Rodrique and Teresa Oster, all of Redwood Valley. Two brothers, Robert and Jerry Fetzer, both of Redwood Valley, and a sister, Margaret Ann Kinley of Lakeview, also survive as do 13 grandchildren. Recitation of the Rosary for the Nebraska native will be held tomorrow night at 7:30 at Zimmerman Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, Msgr. Andre Tournier officiating. Burial will be in Ukiah Cemetery.
