Surnames: English, Goforth, Hurt Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UW.2ADE/1751 Message Board Post: Ukiah Daily Journal Friday, November 24, 1944 OBITUARY Covelo, Nov. 17.--Funeral services for Frank Goforth were held November 9 from the McNary Chapel at Colusa. Mr. Goforth passed away at Williams November 7 after a lingering illness at the age of 69 years. He was one of the early pioneers, born at Potter Valley September 8, 1875. He came to Covelo where he engaged in farming and stock raising, but had to discontinue work several years ago on account of ill health. He bore his afflictions uncomplainingly. He was highly regarded as a business man and had a great many friends and his passing is a great sorrow among them. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Ted Goforth, Earl Goforth, Burdis Martindale, John Taylor, Gene Harpe and "Pud" Goforth. The beauty of the chapel with the many floral tributes in the background, the soft music in muted harmony, the comforting message to the bereaved relatives, delivered by Rev. Stotts of the Methodist church, were perfect. H. H. Moore of Colusa was soloist and sang "Goodnight Here, But Good Morning Up There" and "In the Garden." And in closing the organist played "Going Home." Interment was in the Williams Cemetery with J. D. McNary officiating. Those who mourn his passing are his wife, Bertha Goforth of Williams, and six children, Irma Hurt, Lola English, Jack Goforth of Williams, Frank Goforth, Jr., of Arbuckle, Everett Goforth of Ukiah, Elmer Goforth of Covelo, 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. There are stars that go out in the darkness When the silvery light shineth on, There are roses whose perfume still lingers When blossoms are faded and gone There are hearts full of light and sweetness When no longer this life current flows. Still their goodness lives on with the living Like the soul of the star and the rose. Surnames: Hagler Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UW.2ADE/1744 Message Board Post: Ukiah City Press Friday, August 29, 1879 A Sad Death By private hands we learn of the death of John Hegler, of Round valley, by the most horrible of deaths, hydrophobia. Sometime in April last he was awakened by the noise of his dogs, evidently lighting some animal in the door yard. In his bare feet he went to look out. As he did so, a skunk attempted to rush into the house. Kicking it out his toe was bitten by the maddened animal, though not so seriously but it soon healed up. No further trouble was experienced from the wound until last Thursday night, and 16 hours after he died in the convulsions of hydrophobia. Everything that could be was done to alleviate his sufferings, but with little avail. He would snap, growl and bark at those coming near, and the sight of water at once threw him into spasms. Hydrophobia among dogs in this state is comparatively unknown, and we believe this is only the second undoubted case of it in the human family. A few fairly developed instances are on record of its being produced in domestic animals by the bite of wild ones, but it is considered as not a disease of the Pacific coast. Ukiah City Press Friday, August 29, 1879 Round Valley EDITOR PRESS: Our quiet little valley was startled on Friday morning last at the death of P. H. Hagler, and equally so a the cause--hydrophobia. He was bitten by a skunk in April. The bite soon healed up and to all appearance he was as well as ever until within four of five days of his death. He is said to have suffered greatly during the last stages of the disease. He was buried on Saturday, at 2 p.m., Rev. J. L. Broaddus conducting the funeral services. Mr. Hagler leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his untimely demise. Three of the children are married, and the remaining six are under the 15 years of age. Though an industrious, hard working man, he has had to pull up stream these late years, and consequently has left the family in needy circumstances. A subscription is being circulated by Rev. Hartsough for their immediate relief. Mendocino County Indexes http://www.pacificsites.net/~pcarna Mendocino County Tombstone Photos http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mendocem/
