The stage was driven by Thomas Hitchcock and had just made the turn in the road on the grade at the school house when in some unaccountable way it capsized. The driver was thrown violently to the ground and rendered unconscious. The arteries in one of his legs were broken and evidently he was badly injured in the head for after regaining consciousness he became delirious at intervals and died at 9 o'clock next morning. Mr. and Mrs. William Bonney, of San Francisco, who were passengers for Stewart's Point to spend a few weeks vacation, were sitting by the driver. Mrs. Bonney received a compound fracture of one of her legs above the ankle. The break is a bad one, the bone having been thrust through the flesh. Mr. Bonney escaped with a few scratches. Four Italians were in the stage bound for Stewart's Point to work and were more or less shaken up, but none seriously hurt except Louis Bertinni, who suffered a dislocation of the shoulder. Immediately on hearing of the accident, Henry Halliday and Dr. Diddle left in the latter's automobile. The doctor set Mrs. Bonney's broken leg and with her husband was placed in a private conveyance and sent to the sanitarium at Alameda, where she arrived safely and without another mishap. Everything possible was done for Mt. Hitchcock, but his injuries were beyond medical skill and he passed away. The injuries of the others were attended to and they are doing well. The cause of the accident cannot be accounted for, but it is supposed that when the stage had made the turn in the road and entered the straight downhill grade, the wheel struck one of the bumps characteristic of the Sonoma county coast road and was overturned. William Thomas Hitchcock was born on the Garcia River February 26, 1872. On October 6, 1905, he was married in Oakland to Miss Eliza Skinner. To this union three children were born, two of them - John Issac and Thomas Malcom - survive with the mother. He also leaves a father and mother, three brothers and five sisters. Deceased was well liked by all who knew him, and his untimely and sad ending cast a gloom over the whole community. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Gualala church, Rev. C. Swithenbank conducting the services. A very large number of friends and acquaintances attended, and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. The remains were laid away in Gualala cemetery.

He was up and around until the Thursday before, when he complained of not feeling well. He gradually grew worse and on Sunday afternoon he gave up the struggle and peacefully closed his eyes in death. Hiram Gilmore was one of the best known men in this section. He was a man of decision and firmness, but ever just in the dealings with his neighbors. Deceased was born near the city of Rome, Oneida County, New York, on October 22, 1825, and died in Point Arena, July 28, 1907. He moved with his parents when fourteen years of age to Genesee county, that State, wherehe resided for seven years. In 1853, he came to Manchester, where he settled down as a pioneer of that neighborhood and has lived in this vicinity ever since. He was the father of eight children, four sons - - Jay, E. P., Penn, and Everett Gillmore - - and four daughters - - Mrs. E. Bishop, Mrs. Arch Hamilton, Mrs. Wm. Lawson (all of whom are living in the neighborhood) and one who died in infancy. Hiram Gillmore was respected by all who were intimately acquainted with him and was generous to the worthy needy. He preferred to give and receive a flower when it could be appreciated rather than placing it on the grave of a departed. The funeral services were held at the home of Supervisor Gillmore Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. Burchett, and the interment took place in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. D. Halliday, one of the oldest settlers on the lower Mendocino coast, passed away at his home last Saturday evening, October 11, 1924. Joseph Crockett Halliday, was born February 1, 1854, near Pictou, Nova Scotia, was a son of James and Mary Halliday, both deceased. He left school at age of 16, served three years apprenticeship as a blacksmith and machinist, and later, one year in Pawtucket, R. I. He came to Mayfield, near San Jose, Cal., October, 1874, where he worked at his trade. He arrived in Point Arena in March 1875, and worked for some time for F. Matthews, and then formed a partnership with him. Mr. Matthews sold out to F. M. Spaulding, who later sold to L. L. Archibald, who continued the partnership for some years when he was compelled to retire on account of injury to his eyes. Newton P. Howe bought Mr. Archibald's interest and continued the business under the name of Halliday & Howe, until Mr. Halliday's health failed and he left the active work for some time. In 1908, the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Halliday taking the hardware store of the firm and Mr. Howe the blacksmith shop. During this time Mr. Halliday had other interest, being in the livery business with W. H. Haskell, later buying Mr. Haskell's interest and engaging Ed Zimmerman as manager of the stable, which arrangement continued until the auto displaced the horse and the livery stable was closed and Mr. Zimmerman accepted his present position as Steward of the Mendocino County Hospital, at Ukiah. In 1887, Mr. Halliday first became financially interested in farming, buying the Oliver McNeil ranch adjoining the Point Arena lighthouse. He later purchased the Spaulding and Minor adjoining ranches, totaling 450 acres, which he never sold, keeping the same as a dairy. In the 80's he engaged in the sawmill and lumber business on the Garcia river with W. M. Booth, N. Iversen, A. McClure and others, but this partnership was dissolved and the mill business discontinued. After Mr. Halliday decided to give up the blacksmith business and entered the hardware business with his son, J. H. Halliday, who continues the same, he purchased the Cazadero stage line from George Allman in 1902, and ran a 90 mile stage line from Cazadero to Mendocino City, which was at that time the longest line in the State. He gave his personal attention to the stage business for twelve years, assisted by his son, Henry. Being interested in the dairy business, Mr. Halliday and N. Thompson and others formed the Point Arena Creamery Company in 1893, and Mr. Halliday acted as secretary and general manager for a number of years. The Manchester Creamery was owned by the deceased and Mads Beck, until a few years ago, when it was sold to the Western Meat Co. Mr. Halliday was largely interested in forming the Bank of Point Arena, which was chartered June 9, 1905, and he was its first president and acted in that capacity until last June, when he retired from the presidency, remaining as a director. During the hard times in 1920 to 1922, this institution was on a firm financial footing and suffered less in proportion to its capitalization than any bank in the state. Mr. Halliday became a member of the Presbyterian church, February 24, 1895, and took a quiet active interest at all times in the same. Fraternally, he was a member of Garcia Lodge, I. O. O. F., and F. & A. M., and Eastern Star. J. C. Halliday was united in marriage Feb. 10, 1879, with Kate Hiett, who survives him. To this union ten children were born, of whom all but Grant, who died in his infancy, were home to attend their father's funeral. The children are Mary, who lives in Alameda; Albert, from Portland, Oregon; Henry and Tom, who reside at Point Arena; Charley, of Imperial Valley; Ben, of San Francisco; Florence and Mrs. Helen Sorensen of Oakland; and Bertha, of Oil Fields, Fresno County. Mr. Halliday was one of a large family, there being 11 brothers and sisters, two brothers, of whom one, Gordon, resides in San Francisco, came up to attend the funeral. Another brother, Alex, lives in Nova Scotia. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. H. Wicherson conducting the services at the church, and Claiborne Lodge, No. 185, F. & A. M., at the grave, the interment being made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Regardless of the inclemency of the weather, a large assemblage of relatives, friends and acquaintances gathered at the church and grave to pay a last respect to a worth citizen, who will be missed from the community, where for near fifty years he held a position of prominence as a neighbor and citizen.

Doctors at Mendocino County Hospital amputated Joseph Shuda's right leg at the knee following the accident. They say that Shuda still faces grave danger of losing the other leg due to infection that has set in. A late hospital report indicates that doctors will not even give Shuda a 50-50 chance of retaining his leg if the infection isn't controlled soon. Need The Willits man underwent surgery twice last week, and doctors are issuing an urgent call for blood donors as more surgery appears imminent. Estimates are that Shuda will need at least 50 pints of blood, and the call had gone out all over the Willits area. Donors may contribute at the county hospital in Ukiah on Aug. 3. Meanwhile, on Sunday, July 20, a Joe Shuda Benefit Day will be held at the A and W Drive-In on South Main St. in Willits. The net proceeds of the day's business will be donated to help pay Shuda's medical bills, according to drive-in owners John and Pat Alcorn. Donations A special trust fund for Shuda has been established at the Willits branch of the Bank of America, and well-wishers are invited to contribute donations. Persons interested in making a donation should contact bank manager Gene Davis. Meanwhile, doctors are still hoping to save Shuda's other leg, though they admit the future does not look particularly bright at this point. The Willits News Thursday, July 24, 1069 Joe Shuda Dies Willits logging contractor Joseph P. Shuda died last Thursday in a Ukiah hospital of injuries suffered earlier in a logging accident. Shuda, 42, had undergone corrective surgery as physicians at the hospital fought to save his life. But that effort climaxed in death last Thursday evening. A bulldozer operated by Shuda at his logging operation near Boonville overturned, pinning the Willits man under the canopy. Surgery Doctors amputated Shuda's leg and were attempting to save his other leg. Both had been badly crushed in the accident. Shuda was rescued from under the bulldozer by Elmer Standley, a chockersetter for Shuda. Mendocino County Deputy Coroners Barron Hanks and Charles Harrington said an investigation into the fatal accident was continuing earlier this week. Wisconsin Native A native of Wisconsin, Shuda moved to Willits with his family 15 years ago. He worked first as a truck driver and began contract logging last year. Hero At the age of 15, Shuda was awarded the Carnegie Medal for saving the life of a drowning cousin in Wisconsin. Shuda was a veteran of service with the army air force during World War II. Shuda was the husband of Emma Shuda, Willits; the father of Donald, James and JoAnn Shuda, also all of Willits. He was the brother of Lawrence Crotteau, San Francisco; Harold Crotteau, Wisconsin; Lucille Carter, Willits; and Irene Dernovsek and Rita Anderson of Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Requiem Mass was celebrated Monday morning at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial was in Willits Cemetery.
