Mr. De Carli was driving four horses attached to a gang plow to the field to plow. The two colts became frightened and caused the team to run away. De Carli was caught in the plow by the leg and dragged about two yards, his head being on the ground. When the team was stopped the unfortunate man was taken from his position unconscious and all but dead. Drs. Pitts and Diddle was summoned. It was found that he was literally scalped, the skull slightly fractured, one arm badly twisted and otherwise bruised and injured. The wounds were dressed and everything possible done for his comfort. Mr. De Carli revived some and was at times partially conscious, but his injuries were too severe and he passed away Monday. Deceased was 62 years of age and a man of sterling qualities. He came to California when in his teens and by industry and fair dealing accumulated a snug sum of money. He leaves a family. The remains were buried from the Catholic church here Tuesday forenoon, an immense number of friends and neighbors attending to pay their last tribute of respect to an honest man.

Jacobs, an old resident of Point Arena , passed on to the Great Beyond at his home in Ledondo, Los Angeles County, after two weeks of serious illness. Two years ago he received a severe stroke of paralysis, from which he did not fully recover, although he was able to be up and around. Six months ago he received another slight stroke and from that time on began to grow steadily weaker, until the end came on the evening of August the 7th, 1909. Those at his bedside say no pain attended his death at all. Abner D. Jacobs was conspicuous among the old pioneer residents of Mendocino County, coming here when the country was in its original wildness, ere the dusky savage had fled before the advancing step of civilization. A son of John Jacobs, he was born January 6, 1836, in Arnheim, Brown County, Ohio. In 1854, he started for the Pacific with the late Dr. T. L. Barnes, of Ukiah, with an ox team, the trip taking six months. He began life as a miner in Eldorado county. After two years of prospecting he went to Petaluma, Sonoma County, where he remained for a time before going to Mendocino County, where he resided for many years, subsequently purchasing a home east of Ledondo, Los Angeles County, where he lived free from the cares of active business. In 1868, in Mendocino County, Mr. Jacobs married Martha Jane Pound, sister of E. P. and W. B. Pound, of Point Arena. She died on March 22, 1885, leaving a husband and five children, four of which, Mrs. C. W. McFaul, of Westport, John, Charlie, and Violet Jacobs, of Los Angeles were with him as he passed away. He was laid to rest beside his daughter, Hettie, in the Compton cemetery, Los Angeles.

He was born in California, July 2, 1888, but his parents origins are shown on the 1910 census as "unknown." He is living with or next to Joseph Marshall, 34, who seems to be a son of Ralph Waldo Marshall of Illinois, but Leslie is clearly not a brother of Joseph. Family tradition is that Leslie was orphaned at an early age. Do you think he might be connected to the Marshall family of Fort Bragg? Beth
