A Mexican at San Antonio had offered for $50 to guide them to the Gila river, whence they thought of pursuing Kearny's route, notwithstanding the lateness of the season and all the difficulties which, from Emory's account, seem to attend it even for pack-mules. They wished to avoid the circuit which Cooke made. We parted from our friends, fearful for the result.
