Mariposa Gazette, September 17, 1881 SITTING BULL REMOVED TO FORT RANDALL. – At St. Paul dispatch says: A Yates special to the Pioneer Press, received at midnight, says: The removal of Sitting Bull and his band of Indians from the Standing Rock Agency has been accomplished safely. The steamer Sherman arrived at 11 o'clock A. M. Bull had been very defiant, and said he would rather die than go to Fort Randall but through the careful preparations made by the commanding officer, his band was surrounded by a square [sic] of soldiers, and were forced step by step down the bank into the boat, which then started down the river to Fort Randall. A nephew of Sitting Bull made some resistance and was knocked down with the butt of a musket, A squaw of the band , made desperate by the removal, killed her child, tried to commit suicide. It is thought preparations at Randall are such as will prevent trouble there. -- Thomas and Paulette Hilk 1725 Wildwood Ct. Merced, CA. 95340 E-mail address: paulette@elite.net
