Well, some of you locals know that I had planned a field trip to Mormon Bar Quarry for March 24-and you were all welcome to attend---- This was put together in response to a request made from a researcher that specializes in California Cemeteries/tombstones, and carvers who has made a special request to see the Mormon Bar Quarry Site. She had previously been to Raymond to see the quarry there. One of our local historians had obtained permission for us to enter the private land on which the old Mormon Bar quarry site is located . However, when he went this past weekend, to get bearings and exact location and trail identified for us in preparation of our field trip he was shocked and angry to find that all stones and evidence of the former quarry have been removed- ! No doubt one of those "remove and sell your boulders" type operations----but who is responsible and how this was set in motion has not yet been determined- the property has been for sale for several months. As you may know , stones from this quarry were most notably used for the building of the Mariposa Jail.......... This matter will definitely be discussed at the next Historic Sites Meeting-and I will report what I can back to you....for this goes beyond just the quarry- it relates to every other historic site located on private property in this county.
