This short note is found in the Mariposa Gazette Centennial Edition-1854-1954 A lone Nego grave remains to tell the story of around a hundred Negroes who lived at the north edge of town and had their own school house. Aunt Dinah CARUTHERS operated a restaurant where the 49er now is. ========= Does anyone know: the name of this school? the location of this lone grave? anthing further on this section of town? The North end of town is the area where the current 49er market is located- right across the road (Highway 49) from the Mariposa Cemetery which includes Public, Masonic and IOOF sections.
