The below entry of "Jay Dyer" is incorrect. Jay was "Jay William Givens" Dates were 25 September 1974 and 05 July 1978. He was the Great Grand Nephew of Fay Givens Dyer. Son of Vernon Samuel and Sarah Christine Givens. I am his oldest brother, Vernon David Givens. "Dyer, Jay No dates or last name next to Dyer and Wilkinson" The below entry of Ratcliffe Lane is incorrect. Grandpa's full name was "RADCLIFFE" Lane, b. 01/01/1911 "Lane ,Ratcliffe 1911 1974 H/O Emmie Cooper Lane" The two (02) unmarked graves, with just the white crosses, next to the Catheys/Givens plots are those of the two ex-slaves who came out to California with Elazer Givens around 1857/8. The family letter in my posession quotes: "You wish me to inquire into the law in regard to bringing Negros into this state. During the last session of legislature there was a law created whiuch protected Negros in bond or free from coming into this state. But I hope in a short time such law will be remided. One of the priniciple questions of the state campaign is the division of the state which will have no doubt be done in a short time and when it is, the southern division will become a slave state. It is settled almost entirely by southerners and they will exert themselves to the utmost extent to carry the day. Under the present law it is impossible to hold a slave any longer than the expiration of the present year. I don't consider there any risk in bringing "Pratrick" along under this law as no one will put themselves to the trouble of such a measly thing. The matter you had best send him across the plains with 'Lazer and when he gets in I should like to see anyone get him out. It will require no law to make him stick to you he will be glad to have you for a protector. It is a rare excitement for a Negro to desent his master in this country many prefer returning and again entering into slavery than to be left free and throwen on their own resources in this country." 11 Sept 1852 These two white crosses mark the graves of "Patrick Givens" and his son "Benjamin Givens", former slaves. Please correct the records as such. Thanks -Dave
