Sharon- here you go! Page 43 Enchanted Childhoods, by Sargent Hart ================== Part of his trouble , he realized, ws that the only Indian he knew was a half-breed named Pete Hilliard. "Pete sported a beautiful Pancho Villa mustache and drove a big truck to El Portal to meet the train. If there were any tourists arriving he would take one of the passenger buses, and transport those people and supplies that had come in on the train. "People in the Valley would phone in their grocery orders to the (Village) store and when Pete got back from El Portal he woudl deliver them". Pete's method of teaching Hart to drive a 1914 White truck "with an H shift and square box transmission, " was unorthodox but practical. "I would ride with him on his grocery deliveries and he would let me take the wheel. But the moment I let the gears clatter, 'Stop,' he would say. 'Get out,' he would say." And the cresstfallen boy would hve to plod home to the hotel no matter what the weather or distance. ------------------------------------------- The above is a recollection of Hart COOK- On page 70 is a picture of Pete Hiliard and about 20 other Indian folks.........
