Full article: http://www.mtdemocrat.com/columist/hughey27.shtml A bit of the article: An Indian footpath, the route facilitated commerce between the western-slope Miwok Indians and the Mono Indians on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada. The Miwoks traded acorns, berries, beads, arrows and baskets for the Monos' pine nuts, salt, obsidian, and robes made from rabbit and buffalo hides. Even today as a modern paved highway, the course of the road leading down from the pass is especially steep, winding and dangerous. During its early history as an automobile road, drivers were known to freeze at the wheels of their vehicles because the roadway was so narrow and precipitous. ( It might still be happening today----see my note below:-) ============== I am not going to tackle the Tioga- did the Kit Carson pass a couple of years ago! and I am not fond of the stretch of Hiwy 49 between Coulterville and Mariposa either. Have a great weekend, Carolyn
