    1. [CAMARIPO] Arrival of Col. NORRIS from 1854 survey
    2. Of possible interest to NORRIS descendants, from commentary following B.D. Wilson's report on the Indians, 1852, at Library of Congress website: ARRIVAL OF COL. NORRIS Col. Norris arrived in town this week from the desert by way of Turner's Pass, having completed his contract for surveying the government lands. He brings us favorable intelligence from the Tejon.... At the Tejon, after a month of very warm and dry weather, a rain, accompanied with thunder, lightening, hail and snow, on the mountains, and severe cold, had put a very improving face upon all things. The crops look well, and promise great abundance. There are some twelve hundred Indians at the reservation. The Colonel reports every thing well and prosperous, and gives much praise to Lieutenant Beale and his employees for their energy and perseverance in their labors. 2. 1. [CAMARIPO] Hayes party reaches California
    2. Does anybody know offhand whether Judge Benjamin Hayes was an ancestor of Dr. Kenneth Hayes, husband of our former mayor Janet Gray Hayes? I've been to their home, and the historic Hayes Mansion is a short distance from here. Just curious. Here is some more from the Hayes trip account: "On December 31 the junction of the Gila and the Colorado was reached. 'A ferry boat ready for us, and a gentlemanly, polite Mexican, with red stripes down the sides of his pantaloons, perhaps indicative of a military character, as he turned out to be finally. On the opposite side were some sheds, clothes hanging out to dry, soldiers, Indians mixed. Upon inquiry we found that some sixty soldiers were here, escorting Gen. Garcia Condo, the Mexican commissioner to survey the boundary. ... "The Col. estimates the number who have passed here this year at 12,000, of whom about one-half are Sonorians . . . . seor Iturbide goes from here to-morrow for San Diego, to compare notes with the American Commissioner (probably Fremont). The point for the line of boundary has been fixed. "Algodones, Rajadura, and Camp Salvation. on New River, were passed. At Camp Salvation the remnants of the Fremont Association, of New York City, were overtaken, and experiences were compared. Col. Hays, doubtless Jack Hays, had been their leader Their schedule showed Warner's Ranch to be 96 miles away. The American Commissary was stationed here to assist emigrants. ... "After camping at the Laguna, a short march brought the emigrants to sand hills. On the eighth Carizo Creek was reached. on Saturday the twelfth the Hayes party encamped with Col. Agostin Harazthy and W. R. Kerr. "They are sent out with provisions for gratuitous distribution to `distressed emigrants.' The Col. came out here to settle, not for the gold. The provisions seem to be sent on Emory's responsibility, at the earnest instance of the Col. The council of San Diego passed a bye-law appropriating one dollar a day for two men to accompany him. We hear that Burnett is Governor, Fremont and Gwinn Senators. San Jose is the Capital . " [On November 13, 1849, while Judge Hayes was at Socorro, his old friend Peter H. Burnett was elected the first civil Governor of California under American rule. On January 29, 1850, seventeen days after he reached the hospitable camp of Colonel Harazthy, Henry Clay introduced the Missouri Compromise into Congress, by which California was admitted as a free state in the following September.--The Editor.]

    1. [CAMARIPO] Names listed for the two companies in Judge HAYES trip diary
    2. Yesterday the talk began to be resumed of a division of the company. This morning (Friday, 16th) two companies were organized. The first, under Capt. Cooper, consisted of H. M. Cooper, S. Cooper, J. P. Vaughn, Henry Hook, Benj. Hayes, Robert Lincoln, R. C. Phelps, A. T. Drake, W. R. Cain, J. Loan, J. Venable, Eli Shepperd, W. Hines, J. F. Hines, J. White Burnett, Thomas Burnett, J. W. Gage, Smith Ely, Ceo. W. Folger, J. Edmondson, H. Clouds, James Winkler, John Lewis, David Evans, Galloway, ----- Galloway, -----Wills, ----- Steppe, S. Stevenson, Wm. Pickett, and two colored men. Those of the other company were Messrs. J. G. Ridge, J. J. Hampton, T. Truebody, E. Page, E. R. Cathlan, W. Allen, W. Nelson, W. White, J. Robinson, G. Gordon, R. I. Barnett, J. H. C. Laurence, T. Smiley Harris, Thos. Clark, B. Keizer, J. B. Shields, Caleb Shields, J. Holman, I. Holman, R. Long, Garrett Long, W. Long and one colored man. A Mexican at San Antonio had offered for $50 to guide them to the Gila river, whence they thought of pursuing Kearny's route, notwithstanding the lateness of the season and all the difficulties which, from Emory's account, seem to attend it even for pack-mules. They wished to avoid the circuit which Cooke made. We parted from our friends, fearful for the result.

Good road to our nooning, same in the afternoon with saline encrustations. Several of the company were still behind, delayed by the "fascinations" of Galisteo. I had a severe headache and a cold, the first since leaving Independence."

    1. [CAMARIPO] Thomas BURNETT was in company with Judge Benj HAYES
    2. Hey! This is the same trip! Remember in my ggrandpa's memoir he said a young man named Jeffries had shot himself in the foot or something and had to be taken back to their starting point in Missouri? Here is the same incident mentioned by Judge Benjamin Hayes: "Jeffreys was wounded on September 12th at the Lower Spring, in consequence of which they stayed there three days." How about that?!! Now I've got to read Hayes' account!! By the way, Hayes apparently stated that they crossed the Colorado on Dec 31, 1849, whereas my ggrandpa wasn't sure. But if Hayes was correct, then my ggrandpa would indeed qualify as a 49er. Joan in San Jose

    1. [CAMARIPO] From the Marriage Index pre- 1900
    2. Kelley
    3. Listers, before you all email me and tell me that I spelled your grandpappys name wrong- The following were taken from the Marriage Index at the Mariposa Hall of Records. This is the beginning of the MALES ALPHA LIST. The Marriage Index book begins with the MALE NAME INDEX then is followed by the FEMALE NAME INDEX. It is my humble opinion that the pages in the index have be rewritten and are not the original. If you have ever seen this book you will know what I mean. The writting in the book appears to be done in marker, not pen nor quill. Three quarters of the page, with dates ranging from 1866 to 1940's are all done in the same hand writing and the same pen. So, this is alot like the kids game "telephone". Someone tried to read the original writing and wrote what they thought they saw, I read the rewritten writing and wrote what I thought I saw ( regardless of the fact that on occasion Carolyn looked over my hands and said " OH! That should be so and so. " ) I have just written what I saw on the index. Also, for those of you who have never seen the actual book, the dates do not always go in order. An 1890 date may be placed after a date of 1989. ( this is good by the way, it means that as new records are found they are being added to the index! ) And sometimes, a set of names are listed twice on one page ( see ANNALA and CORDOVA below ). Lastly, if anyone wants to take this info and place it into a spreadsheet format, PLEASE DO. I don't have the program to do it, I have to type on our old pc and copy it to this one to mail. 3. John Campbell just wrote to me to remind me that both of the ROGERs are buried in the Mariposa town cemetery per their death certificates. White Rock Rd. is a beautiful drive in the fall. Maybe I can remember where the famous "cross rocks" are on that road. Apparently, they have only been found in this location as well as somewhere in Spain. I remember when I lived down on Ben Hur Road about 20 years ago that a boy scout troop from Madera (I think) had adopted the Pea Ridge Cemetery. They came up once a year to spruce it up. I don't know if they continue to do that.
