From: THE CALL OF GOLD Joseph BRANSON, prominent mining man, who lived to a ripe old age, arrived near HORNITOS, as a child, in the early fifties. In speaking of his boyhood days, he said: "My brothers and I witnessed many shooting and stabbings affairs. Outsiders never interfered with the participants and even if there was a killing, the public took a casual look and then passed by for they knew that curiosity, at such times, might be costly. "I well recall a morning when two Mexican dance-hall girls fought it out, with daggers in the Plaza. Each had a mantilla, or blanket scarf, which was generally worn around the neck, but, when fighting with daggers, was thrown over the left arm as a shield. No one interfered and both girls were mortally wounded. "Another case, which we witnessed, was a fight between tow Mexicans and a white man. One of the Mexicans stabbed the white, who immediately whipped out his gun and shot his assailant, killing him outright. The second Mexican made a lunge for the white, who, although wounded, fired at his new assailant but the shot did not kill instantly. Just at this time, a Chinese happened along, carrying on a pole two jugs of vegetable spray. Paying no attention, he came close to the dying Mexican, who stabbed him. the Chinese dropped his load and ran up the street with the dagger sticking in his ribs but soon fell dead. Four were killed, one of them being an innocent passer-by. "At another time, we boys were going down the steps into the Fandango Hall, under the Campodonico store, when we heard shots within, so we ducked low and watched. Two Mexican musicians had been playing on the stage, when a dispute over the music arose among the dancers, and the two musicians were killed. Almost immediately, it seemed, two others took their places and the dance went on."
There may be other copies around. When my mother did her tapes we came away with copies and many more have been made. The families of whoever made tapes might have copies and would be glad to have someone preserve them. Roena
Hey folks, I ran across this and wouldn't have thought twice but a name jumped out at me: William B. Disbro. I do not know William's email and was wondering if someone could see if he has seen this item. On the off chance that it is his, I descided to forward the message to this list in case anyone else recognizes a surname on it. Carolyn, I think I have found you answer. The sources for the information are no other than Nathaniel Hawthorne's little work called "The Intelligence Office" (March 1844) and chapter 22 of Herman Melville's book "The Confidence-Man" (1857). Both are quite entertaining to read. I will give a little of the latter here... CHAPTER XXII. IN THE POLITE SPIRIT OF THE TUSCULAN DISPUTATIONS. -- "'PHILOSOPHICAL INTELLIGENCE OFFICE' -- novel idea! But how did you come to dream that I wanted anything in your absurd line, eh?" ... "Oh, respected sir," whined the other, crouching a pace nearer, and, in his obsequiousness, seeming to wag his very coat-tails behind him, shabby though they were, "oh, sir, from long experience, one glance tells me the gentleman who is in need of our humble services." "But suppose I did want a boy -- what they jocosely call a good boy -- how could your absurd office help me? -- Philosophical Intelligence Office?" "Yes, respected sir, an office founded on strictly philosophical and physio -- " "Look you -- come up here -- how, by philosophy or physiology either, make good boys to order? Come up here. Don't give me a crick in the neck. Come up here, come, sir, come," calling as if to his pointer. "Tell me, how put the requisite assortment of good qualities into a boy, as the assorted mince into the pie?" "Respected sir, our office -- " "You talk much of that office. Where is it? On board this boat?" "Oh no, sir, I just came aboard. Our office -- " "Came aboard at that last landing, eh? Pray, do you know a herb-doctor there? Smooth scamp in a snuff-colored surtout?" ... It takes a while to find out what they are talking about - but a quite enjoyable read. In short, an "Intelligence Office" is an employment agency. It seems that the term is still in use - at least in Missouri. The St. Louis City Revised Code section 8.40.010 says: 8.40.010 Intelligence office defined. Whosoever shall open or keep an office or place in the City for the purpose of obtaining employment for others, or obtaining employees for others, or giving information whereby employers or employees may be obtained for a compensation to be paid by either party, shall be deemed to be the keeper of an intelligence office. (1948 C. Ch. 21 ' 1: 1960 C. ' 652.010.) And, in St. Joseph, MO a cost of an "Employment or intelligence office" business license starts at $25/year. Dear list, I have posted a few of the census results that I know the names are of interest. My next trip to the Archives will be next Thursday, Oct 19. If there are any Mariposa names from any census other than the 1880 that I should keep my eye open for, please say so. (I have a copy of the 1880 census at home and can search it more easily there.) I will mostly be working in the 1900, 1910, & 1920 census, but will be glad to check the 1860 and 1870 too. The 1850 is very large (about 200 pages)because it was done before the different counties were formed from Mariposa and so it covers a very large area. I can look someone up in that only if you can tell me which township. It's only divided into Bear Valley & Townships #1, 2, 3, & 4. I don't believe there is an 1840 census (at least not one done by the federal gov't) because Calif wasn't a state then. Sharon Dulcich dulcich6@aol.com

But, I first would like to share a sorta cute account in the 1849 diary of nineteen year old, Robert ECCLESTON, a member of the FREMONT Association, while traveling the little used APACHE PASS Trail to CA in 1849. Supposedly, his is the only known diary of the Apache Pass Southern Trail - the others being about the more popular 1). Southern - Chihuahua - Guadalupe Pass Trail and the 2). Gila River - Kearny/Kit Carson - my ggf Trail:-). Back in May, I posted an 1846 account of the Pima Villages in present day Arizona - apparently at the juncture of all the Southern Trails to CA.. At the time I questioned how the goldrushers three years later would change these delightful people. I especially thank RUTH>ruth4527@pacbell.net who sent portions of the ECCLESTON trail diary, as well as CINDY<lobuglio@thegrid.net> whose library a week or so later also secured a copy. We join our 19 year old diarist Robert ECCLESTON on November 19, 1849 as he writes about the "Pimos" as he calls them. Hi Gary! Glad to help= I wonder though, because there are probably many PRESTON events (Birth, Death and Marriages) and because there are many PRESTON researchers on this list if it might help to get a roll call on these folks- ie, Mel and I will not do the research on the information that is already available through fellow list members- How does that sound-? Can those of you who have PRESTON birth, Death and Marriage transcriptions or dates etc please post here? Then I can pick up the rest! or verify dates, etc based on the information you already have. I do not remember the GASH family being mentioned before- and will pull all we can find out of the Birth, Death and Marriage for you on that name. Thanks folks!
