    3. Here Mel- this will clarify the differences- What is the difference between a Public and a Confidential marriage license? If public: You can get married anywhere in the State of California, you need at least one witness during your ceremony, and the marriage record is made available to the public. more info: http://www.ci.sf.ca.us/countyclerk/public1.htm#public If confidential: You must be living together, getting married in the County where you purchased your license, no witnesses are required, and the marriage record is only available to the husband and wife. more info: http://www.ci.sf.ca.us/countyclerk/public1.htm#confidential The state used to also require blood test for public record marriage and not confidential- now the state does not require blood tests at all. California is still surprising you !! 2. Kelley
    3. While at the Hall today, I photocopied the Index to the Intent to Declare Citizenship. Ok, that is probably not the real title, but the fiches says Intent to Declare, so be it... Anyways,. I will attempted to type the index and send it to the list. It is very hard to read. If in the mean time you want a name checked, send me the request, off line. I ah, forgot to go to the ATM, so I only copied A thru S, but will get the rest of the index tomorrow morning. Mel

    1. Re: [CAMARIPO] Born in CA 1830s, died after 1940
    2. Gee, Harriet, doesn't it make you wonder who "Mary Smith" really was? Part of the problem we have in tracing early California Indians is the switchover in names from real Indian names, such as Tabuce and Totuya, to Christian names, Maggie Howard and Maria Lebrado. The Christian names seem to have been applied pretty much at random by whites who couldn't pronounce or spell the Indian names. Mary or Maria seemed especially popular for Indian women. I got a kick out of the following incident related in Shirley Sargent's "Pioneers in Petticoats": "A Mariposan asked to be taught Indian words, and had difficulty writing down Maria's speech. Maria [Lebrado] laughed, 'You can no spell it? You no can spell what a bird sings.' " (p.12) =================================================== In a message dated 10/16/00 10:27:50 AM Pacific Daylight Time, harriet@madnet.net writes: > > "Mary Smith" > > Madera County Indians – 1928 > > Birth Dates: 1828-1928 > Roll Approved in 1933 Listing the Indians of California > qualified under Sec. 1 of the Act of May 18, 1928. > (Madera County Extracted) > > Bureau of Indian Affairs - Establishing American Indian Ancestry. > > American Indian Resources - Links to further research. > > > http://www.cagenweb.com/~madera/Indians1928.htm > > Smith, Mary 1838, Mar 7 North Fork 18363 > > > ==== CAMARIPO Mailing List ==== > If you have a family chronicle I will be happy to add it on the Mariposa > County GenWeb Page. >

    1. [CAMARIPO] Re: Mono Museum in North Fork
    2. Hi, Harriet! Thanks for the info! I'm Miwok myself, but I'm interested in compiling names of early (before 1850) California Indians of whatever tribe around Mariposa. I'm hoping by researching these early Indian families to find something that will give me a clue about my ggrandmother North Star, who was said to be a Yosemite Miwok. So far, I haven't found much but maybe something will ring a bell. After extracting the early names from the CA Death Records, I found some of these, including CHEPO, in the Madera GenWeb 1900 Indian Census. Unfortunately, not many Miwoks are listed in that census -- mostly Mono and "Digger." (It should be noted that there isn't any such thing as a "Digger" tribe. That was a derogatory term used by the gold miners.) If you would like to list some of the names from the book, that would be helpful. Thanks, Joan in San Jose =============================================== In a message dated 10/16/00 11:01:41 AM Pacific Daylight Time, harriet@madnet.net writes: > > Are you aware of the MONO Museum in North fork, CA? > > It is run by the MONO Tribe. When the husband died, the wife cut her hair off and placed it on his body to go with him. Thereafter, she wore short hair as her "badge of widowhood". She would mix his ashes from the cremation with pine, etc and spread it over her face and body to repel would be suitors for an appropriate period of time...or perhaps forever if she wished never to remarry. 3. Roena, I have a copy of the book "THE CALL OF GOLD", by Newell D. CHAMBERLAIN, Nove. 1936, in which appears the picture of David CLARK's house. Also there is a paragraph which reads: "At about five miles from MARIPOSA, on the left side of the highway, is located the well-preserved residence, built in 1864, of David CLARK, who then operated a saw-mill close by. One and a half miles more brings you to MIDPINES, a mining center close to the rich mining districts of SHERLOCKS Creek, SAXON Creek, SWEETWATER Creek, FELICIANA Mountain, etc. At MIDPINES, there has been erected a monument showigs the exact size of one hundred million dollars of gold, which is approximately the amount of gold mined in MARIPOSA County, in its first fifty years." Included in the book is a mention of Peter FEE's diary in which he states "May, 1858, paid cash to D. CLARK for shingles, 12000, $96." - Good Hunting Harriet -----Original Message----- From: RoenaD@aol.com [mailto:RoenaD@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2000 5:20 PM To: Harriet@madnet.net Subject: (no subject) I have that picture, where did you get it? 1. [CAMARIPO] Born in 1840s in CA, died after 1940
    2. In the list of those born in the 1840s, we begin to see some familiar names, such as BROWN, DICK, HOGAN, HOWARD, SAM, TOM. Maggie HOWARD, whom we know as Tabuce, is on this list. Who was Emma CHEPO, with parents' last names SAM? Here is Lottie GEORGE, sister of Lizzie? Who was Mary JACK? And what about names like Bill CORNBREAD, Buffalo JIM, John QUAIL, Nick YUMA? Among mother's maiden names, we have CHETNICUTE, WELENOPEM, and WYAPUAK -- sure sounds Indian to me! And we also have some given names and middle names which appear to have been Indian -- Tatzumbi, Acoyhutpha. How about Louisa Pakomanie TOM, whose parents were SAM? These death records make interesting reading. Sure wish I could find some of North Star's relatives among these names! 1. [CAMARIPO] Born in CA 1830s, died after 1940
    2. The following are the CA Death Records for individuals born in CA in the 1830s, died after 1940. While some of these records may have typos in the birth year, some appear to be people who actually lived over 100 years. In particular, having been born in CA before the Gold Rush, some of these are probably California Indians -- the first listing for "Captain Alex," for example, as Indian men were frequently known as "Captain." Does anyone recognize "Lizzy George" of Mariposa, or "Mary Smith" of Madera? 3. Hi Mike- Nice work!! How fun-! Never would have guessed~!! And the term being used as late as 1948(and beyond?)! And to think I worked in the employment/recruitment arena for 20 years!:-)! If I had to "guess" I was going to say it may have been a Pinkerton office- I kept buzzing around that thought- but was baffled as to why it did not just say Pinkerton- ! I really appreciate also the new ebooks links(uofv and eldritch)---these really help cut down on my book purchases- !!I will read the books you mention at the sites!!!! I keep hoping that MOA will change their format:-! but they really have done a tremendous job on their content!! Definitely enjoying, Thanks! I hope it is OK to transfer your answer over to the folks at California History!
