    3. Here is a listing of the libraries of the CILC- California Indian Library Collection: In general, the California Indian Library Collections (CILC) for a specific county are located at the main county library. However, in some cases the collections have been placed at a branch library where they are more accessible to the Native Californian population. Below is a list with addresses of the California State Library and the county libraries where CILC collections are housed: http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/cilc/bibs/locations.html also see this site: Bibliographies of Northern and Central California Indians http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/cilc/bibs/toc.html Good hunting! 1. [CAMARIPO] New Question / James SAVAGE
    2. Last night, I was reading what Carl Russell had to say about Major SAVAGE in "100 Years in Yosemite" -- really good book, well documented. James SAVAGE had a white wife and daughter who died on the wagon train trip out to California. Russell was in touch with some second cousins to get information about Savage's background. Now, it is well known that James SAVAGE had five Indian wives that he "married" from the various bands who were helping him with his trading post. SAVAGE was shot to death by a white man in 1852. Some of the Indians mourned him, while the Yosemite Miwoks seemed to despise him. My question is this: Did James SAVAGE have any offspring from his five Indian wives? Who were the wives, did they have names? Are there any known descendants from James SAVAGE? The only "Savage" I found on the Indian census in the Madera GenWeb was the first name of a Savage LEWIS. No Indians with SAVAGE surname in those lists. Does anybody know? Joan in San Jose

Found this snippet in the paper yesterday. Twenty-fives years ago today: Funeral service for Nathan SWEET have been set for Monday. Sweet was a local historian who was considered an authority on the development of Madera and Mariposa Counties. He and his widow were Grand Marshals of the Sierra Mountaineer Days parade in 1971. I know he was involved in the Fresno Flats and Madera Museums and probably Mariposa. I know he wrote many books and articles about Madera and Mariposa. If you get a chance check out the Museum and Library. Perhaps they have some of his work there. Harriet

    3. Below is a description of a book selling on Ebay. C. Gregory Crampton did an excellent job editing Eccleston's diary when he was in Mariposa County. I have a copy of this book and it is one of my favorites on the discovery of the Yosemite Valley. The current bid is $21.00. I think this book is sold by our local History Center, however, I don't know for how much. After checking some of the antiquarian book searches on the net, this seems to be a reasonable price. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=466264306 "The Mariposa Indian War 1850-1851" - Diaries of Robert Eccleston: The California Gold Rush, Yosemite, and the High Sierra - Univ. of Utah Pres, Copyright 1957, Reprint Edition 1975. Unread and mint condition, this fine book is a wonderful history of California's greatest times highlighting the California Gold Rush and discovery of our most beautiful National Park, as well as the history of the indigenous peoples of the area. Buyer pays actual shipping via USPS priority mail. Don Mariposa

    1. [CAMARIPO] A. HARRIS
    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. The idea of public camp grounds to accommodate Yosemite visitors became apparent about 1878. The commissioners set aside a piece of land that was part of the old LAMON property in the vicinity of the present Ahwahnee Hotel. Mr A. HARRIS was granted the position of administrator for this new venture. He grew fodder for the animals, offered stable facilities, sold provisions and rented equipment to this new breed of tourist. The HARRIS Camp Ground was the forerunner of the public auto camps, and housekeeping camps. The register , kept for comments of campers, was presented to the Yosemite Museum by the HARRIS descendants. ================== the above extracted from _100 Years in Yosemite_

    1. [CAMARIPO] Mary LEONARD, daughter of Maria Lebrado
    2. Hey! I just found out today (thank you, Harriet) that Maria LEBRADO (Totuya, granddaughter of Chief Tenaya and known as "the last survivor") had a daughter named Mary LEONARD. I checked out the 1928 Indian Register and found a whole family of Indian people named LEONARD. So here is the question: Can anyone fill us in on this family, lines of descent, etc? Any descendants around today? Were these Indian Leonards related to Zenas Leonard, who made the trip in 1833 with Capt Joseph Walker? I think it's possible some folks may have misunderstood what was meant by calling Maria Lebrado the "last survivor." It did not mean she was the last of the Yosemite Miwoks. It meant she was the last one living who was there when the Mariposa Battalion went into Yosemite Valley. Even though young, she was an eye-witness to many events, including the death of Tenaya. Apparently there were several interviewers who recorded Maria Lebrado's memories, including Carl Russell and Mrs. H.J. Taylor. There is also supposed to be a transcript by May S. Corcoran at the Yosemite Museum. Do you suppose they would let us have a copy of it? Joan
