(Smile) That's a possibility and we can watch for a similar name -- but I have an idea that there was another word probably meaning the "star that does not move" or something like that rather than a compound word. I saw the word for the north star in another Indian language and now don't remember where I saw it. It was a short word. My Aunt Phoebe told me North Star's name in Miwok and it was only two syllables with kind of a lilt in the middle, but I couldn't pronounce it much less spell it. (As Totuya said, "You no can spell what a bird sings.") If there is anyone around who still speaks Miwok, maybe we can find out. This appears to be a much better recording for Township 3 than the 1900 census. It is separated into the Picayune, Beaso, and Crane Valley Rancheros. If you wish to view the original census the Madera Genealogical Society has the microfilm. It can be made available at the Madera Library if you contact me ahead of time. We also have an update to the 1920 Madera City Directory with A-F at <http://www.cagenweb.com/~madera/1920Madera.htm>. Good hunting, Ken Doig

Hi list! I just wanted to point out that this furniture store belonged to Alfred Gilman Clough and that "Fred" was his nickname. He was a County Assessor in Merced. Still searching for information on this line in hopes of connecting it to my Orson Clough>Evelyn Clough in Mariposa/Tulare county. Evelyn Clough was my great grandmother born to Orson Clough and Julia Marsh on October 20, 1860 in place unknown, possibly Stockton, San Joaquin or Three Rivers, Tulare. Searches in both areas have come up empty. It seems Evelyn had two legal fathers at birth. Her parents divorced sometime during the pregnancy and her mother remarried Ira BLOSSOM in September, 1860 in Stockton, San Joaquin, just one month before Evelyn's birth. Evelyn carried her step-father's name throughout her life. However, legal documents show her name as CLOUGH. She lived in Tulare County all her life and was married four times. Her surnames in order of marriage were CAHOON,BUSBY,MENTEER and LONG. She was still living in the 1911 census in Lemon Cove, Tulare. The date, place of death and burial are still a mystery. It is possible she is buried on her old homestead in Three Rivers, Tulare. Evelyn had Clough siblings and they are William Orson b. NY, Fred b. NY. and Ida May (married Bryant) b. IL. I would greatly appreciate conversation with anyone who might be connected to any of these family lines and could help me fill in the gaps. Lineage information follows my signature. Mariposa Gazette, September 17, 1881 SITTING BULL REMOVED TO FORT RANDALL. At St. Paul dispatch says: A Yates special to the Pioneer Press, received at midnight, says: The removal of Sitting Bull and his band of Indians from the Standing Rock Agency has been accomplished safely. The steamer Sherman arrived at 11 o'clock A. M. Bull had been very defiant, and said he would rather die than go to Fort Randall but through the careful preparations made by the commanding officer, his band was surrounded by a square [sic] of soldiers, and were forced step by step down the bank into the boat, which then started down the river to Fort Randall. A nephew of Sitting Bull made some resistance and was knocked down with the butt of a musket, A squaw of the band , made desperate by the removal, killed her child, tried to commit suicide. It is thought preparations at Randall are such as will prevent trouble there. -- Thomas and Paulette Hilk 1725 Wildwood Ct. Merced, CA. 95340 E-mail address: paulette@elite.net

I have been following this Indian research that's been going on. I have not seen any mention of an Indian burial ground in Clark's Valley. Did anyone know there was one there? I'm sure there aren't any signs of it any more, but it was there. Maybe some of your ancesters were there. My mother was a Clark and it was there when she lived there. There was an Indian couple that lived on the ranch by the name of Jim and Julie Howard. I know nothing about them but have their picture. Roena

I met with the head of Parks and Recs to get some understanding of the index system for Mariposa Cemetery and to see about Bessie and Thomas ROGERS- The index has no listing for Thomas and Bessie- this means either 1. They do not have a headstone 2. They are buried in either the IOOF or Masonic sections- these each have a separate index. They also may be buried at St. Joseph- another separate index. So according to this, if a DC says only "Buried in Mariposa Cemetery"- it could mean looking in four different indexes. I also learned that the index used by Parks and Rec is the one that Jim Ustus(?) of the Senior Center used- Hope this helps a little-?! Carolyn
I found these people listed as buried at the Indian Cemetery at El Portal: Billy Wilson Bridgeport Sam Indian Cemetery Near Bear Creek: Fred Beale Question: Has anyone documented other graves at these places? Would they even have headstones? Is this information online anywhere? S-W-L-F-A
