    2. Thanks, Mel! I am so spoiled; sometimes entire family trees have fallen right into my computer. 3. Hey Gang, You may know that I have been spending a great deal of time at the MariposaHall of Records. I wish you could be there with Carolyn and I. Laverne and Shirley! Lucy and Ethel! And sometimes, dumb and dumber! What seems to happen is I (or we), get tired of looking at the same old fiches so we just grab anything else and start reading. While on these odd fiche searches, we find some bit of info for some name that I can't remember who is researching the name.( Carolyn seems to remember...) Then, I don't print it out or write it down, just because I don't know who would want it................. So, just for me, if you want me to keep my eyes open for info for you- I am asking for your help. Off line, to my tkelley@yosemite.net address, send me your Mariposa Names....... in order like this. ( This way I can cut and paste and make an alpha notebook to take with me to the Hall. ) SMITH, John a bit of info about John, just one line.. married Sue BROWN 1865 THEN YOUR EMAIL ADDY " " Peter son of above tkelley@yosemite.net PRAIRIE, Any bbonhigh@aol.com Get the idea? 2. Mel & Carolyn, two questions: (1) What kind of information do you get from looking up a marriage? (My grandaunt Lizzie Grant GOFF married William HANSEN in 1883, and I saw the Gazette announcement. I already know Lizzie's dates. Would I get any additional info about parents etc by asking you to look up the marriage record? For example, info about her mother Minnie North Star GOFF?) (2) How much searching do we have to do in other counties, since Mariposa was divided up? What records do you have and what do they have? (For example, Lizzie GOFF was born 12Aug1866 in Mariposa but died Lizzie HANSEN 20Sept1941 in Merced. Do I need to contact Merced volunteers for DC lookup? Would I get any additional info by doing so?) 3. Hi All If anyone finds anything on the family of Green Vandegrift I would like to have it. He is the nephew of my Great Great Grandfather Benjamin Wills. I have just found that he came to Ca. Mariposa Co. In the early 1850s and married Martha Jane Scroggins before 1865. They had six children but I have only found the notice of the divorce in 1879. I know he returned to Arkansas and died there. I have found that she remarried to a David Kirkpatrick he died in two months and about seven months she married a Joseph Henwood he was working at the Washington mine, Hornitos. All this information was in the Gazette of 1879 and 1880. Tom -- Thomas and Paulette Hilk 1725 Wildwood Ct. Merced, CA. 95340 E-mail address: paulette@elite.net

    1. [CAMARIPO] Louisa Westfall Hilliard
    2. Sharon
    3. I received a Fresno Bee article today on Louisa dated 5/18/1952. This one really has me scratching my head. Her funeral was held at the Ahwahnee Roundhouse, Raymond, Madera, county. she was "generally known as one of the oldest Indians in the hills." It says she was close to 100, possibly older, at least 90. Her father: "one of the chiefs whose thumb mark was on the treaties which gave all the Indian lands to the whites" and lived in Yosemite Valley and he had no white name Her brother: Peter Westfall, last real chief of the Ahwahnee Indians, died in 1934 Sisters: Old Mrs. Roan and Mrs. Charlie Hart Louisa had no children. Nephew: Charlie Roan Niece: Lizzie Graham This is what is confusing: As some of you know, Bingaman's book said that Louisa was Pete HILLIARD's sister. Here she has the name Hilliard as well as Westfall. The article has no explanation for the Hilliard surname. It lists a brother named Pete who dies in 1934. Just my luck...Pete Hilliard died in 1934. If anyone has more information on this lady, I'd love to hear from you Thank you, Sharon

    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. Now here are some interesting maps- if you look at the sample reference map you will see that the land owners names are included! (not on all maps- read the descriptions carefully) There is Ohio! and for California there is currently only Fresno- but note the boundaries- many run in to the Madera and Mariposa lines- http://members.aol.com/oldmapsetc/index.html Note that these are definitely more affordable- Carolyn

    1. Re: [CAMARIPO] Louisa Westfall Hilliard
    2. Sharon, this is the CA Death Record for Louisa Westfall Hilliard (misspelled in record). It shows "Westfall" as the father's name, so "Hilliard" had to be either her married name or the name of her mother's later husband, take your choice. Since Louisa had no children, maybe she never married. I would guess that the children born to Westfall took Hilliard's name, as Mama moved along. Didn't you say their mother was Mary Brown Westfall Hilliard Allen? (How sure are you of Mary's birth year?) HILLARD LOUISA 03/20/1856 WESTFALL F CALIFORNIA MADERA 05/08/1952 96 yrs Add What do you think? Joan P.S. The stuff about the Indian treaty is in conflict with other accounts which say the Yosemite Indians didn't sign a treaty. That is one reason the Mariposa Battalion went after Tenaya and his band; he didn't come in to sign a treaty and they wanted him removed to the reservation. Also, it looks like a case of "too many chiefs and not enough Indians." Interesting article just the same. Thanks! P.P.S. The part about "giving all the Indian lands to the whites" is also in error, as there were at least 100 original tribes in California and only 18 signed treaties (which were never ratified by the US Senate and so were invalid). But this is probably a case such as pointed out by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, who said: "I believe the old treaty has never been correctly reported. If we ever owned the land we own it still, for we never sold it. In the treaty councils the commissioners have claimed that our country has been sold to the government. Suppose a white man should come to me and say, 'Joseph, I like your horses, and I want to buy them.' I say to him, 'No, my horses suit me, I will not sell them.' Then he goes to my neighbor, and says to him, 'Joseph has some good horses. I want to buy them but he refuses to sell.' My neighbor answers, 'Pay me the money, and I will sell you Joseph's horses.' The white man returns to me and says, 'Joseph, I have bought your horses and you must let me have them.' If we sold our lands to the government, this is the way they were bought." Josephy, Jr., Viking Press, 1969) ===================================================== In a message dated 10/27/00 5:32:41 PM Pacific Daylight Time, syvonne@earthlink.net writes: > > I received a Fresno Bee article today on Louisa dated 5/18/1952. 2. Sharon
    3. Zoog Disney isn't a relative I'm trying to find. It is a popular children's site on the net. In the past 3 months I have had to reformat my hard disk and start over because of computer problems. I just did this yesterday and anyone who has knows what a nightmare this is. Just this morning my husband informs me that the guy at work reformatted his computer also and it was because of a file that his daughter downloaded from the Disney site. It now dawns on me that since my last reformat all was going well....until my daughter visited Disney this past week! She told me that in order to play the games she had to download "something". Just thought I'd share for those of you with kids who frequent this site...BEWARE Sharon
