The date is about 1938 or later since the theator building has replaced the Turners stable and the Standard Station is already built. The 1918 High School is center far left with the new school, Court House, and Catholic Church out of the picture. The Sierra View Motel is in the picture and this is approximately how Mariposa looked when we moved here in 1943. Thank you for the heads up. Leroy --------------59305AC266B1--
I'm not convinced it's Mariposa. I can't find the Courthouse. One building looks like it could be the old Masonic Hall, another the Fremont House/IOOF building. I can't seem to find the old jail either. Also, what about St. Joseph's? Anna M. Herrera
I hope that the current inventory of the Mariposa History Center basement may give us an inventory such as this one done by Douglas County, Oregon- http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpdouglasdescrip.html Carolyn
Can't be. After walking those hilly streets on Halloween night, I don't see how this is Mariposa. Not a single hilly street. And what is that large brick building in the back on the left side?? Even if the printed the neg backwards ( which happened all the time ) I don't think this is Maripo! mel
Funny you should ask! I cannot get my perspective on this either- I was looking for the most obvious landmark, the courthouse. Anyone else have a perspective on this? Proclamation of Thanksgiving 1863 By President Abraham Lincoln "The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies... no human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe. a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. and [to] fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine Purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union." May you all enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving today. Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer
Nancy, These are all the AUTRANDS buried in Madera Cemetery District prior to 1960 when you figure Carmine AUTRAND died. She is not listed in the California Death Index as having died in California. I think she either moved out of California or perhaps changed her last name. Could she have remarried? I could find no death information on her son from her first marriage. Have you checked Joseph's death certificate for information it might contain? My only other suggestion is that you write to JAY'S CHAPEL, 1121 Roberts Avenue, Madera, CA 93637. They have been in business here since 1893 and might be able to dig out some information that is not recorded elsewhere. Sorry I couldn't find anything more for you. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. It has helped fill in some blanks and made my head spin on other things. Is this information exactly as the census was written? I did not know that Carmen had another son but did know that she had been married before. Have you been able to find any death records for her. I found that Joseph had died in Southern California while living with my grandfather Anthony but it looks like Carmen just up and disappeared. I really think she passed somewhere between 1930 and 1933. I've been told that my grandparents looked after Joseph from about February 1934 until his death in July 1935. Can you think of anywhere I can look for her records. I thought she passed in Sacrament or Yolo counties but no records could be found. My cousin thought she may have passed in Madera as that is where they lived before Joseph moved to Southern California. I'm sorry this is so long but I'm soooooooooooooo confused right now. Again thank you for your help in located the census information. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Nancy Autrand-De Jesus
Now, let me get this straight.... does this make Sharon the list STEP MOTHER? Good luck Sharon, I will try to continue to torment C! Mel
Dear Sharon: Welcome aboard and thank you for becoming List Mom. Ray Cannon Searching: CANNON, HART, VIGNOLO and LOVEJOY in Mariposa, Tuolumne, Madera and Fresno Counties.
Hi Folks- Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I am pleased to tell you that our new list Mom, is Sharon Dulcich- Yes, that dedicated RootsWeb volunteer from Kern County. Sharon is researching the Dulcich, Spagnoli and a few other Mariposa County families. Her research has taken her to the National Archives in DC this year as well as bringing her to Mariposa. Sharon is an accomplished volunteer researcher. I am going to be right here on the list and at the other end of your computer -no good-byes needed! Sharon will be doing the greeting, coordinating, and general tech help (she is a real good techie!!) and hosting the list. I will still be hands-on researching at the Hall of Records, as time permits, and most importantly trying to bring the Mariposa Website back in order! Thanks Sharon for volunteering to host this list, and thanks to all of you who keep the Mariposa Research and History flowing! Best, Carolyn
Thank you Carolyn for such a nice intro; I'm not sure I recognize myself!! I just want everyone to know that, for all intents and purposes, things will be staying the same. It will just be me behind the scenes doing the "techie stuff" and taking some of the weight off Carolyn's shoulders. She will still be here to answer questions and steer us right on all things Mariposan. I hope that everyone on the list will be enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving. And let's keep the Mariposa history going strong. Best regards, Sharon
