    2. Don Rose
    3. Hi, Mike.... You are correct. It is near the Green Mountain area of Mariposa County generally speaking. It is in the White Rock district on White Rock Road between Mariposa and Le Grand traveling southwest. Le Grand is in Merced County. There is a Lewis School (one room school) which is still standing. It is about 1/4 mile off of White Rock Road on the Pocahontas Mine Road. On the west side of White Rock Road is the LEWIS Cemetery where ORMs, BENNETTs and Eli GANN are buried. Also on the west side of the road is the Jake LEWIS house. It has a rock corral. White Rock Road Ben Hur Road Loop is a beautiful drive this time of the year Don Rose Mariposa ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael White <white@mae.engr.ucdavis.edu> To: <CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2000 10:17 PM Subject: [CAMARIPO] Where is Lewis'? > Hi, > I have been having a heck of a time trying to locate > on current maps where my ancestors have lived in the > central valley! 1. [CAMARIPO] BUTLER vs SHAW- 1874
    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. The Mariposa Sentinel, Fall 1973 issue contains the second place Junior Historian's essay Contest Winner- The article is written by a then 18 year old Wendy Pearson, born in Chowchilla later moving and completing school in Mariposa. Her article is titled Segregation...99 years ago. This story tells of a court trial ensuing when a young Indian boy tried to enroll in the Sebastopol School. It is the year 1874, August. James BUTLER takes his son, James BUTLER, Jr... to the Sebastopol School house in the Sebastopol School District. T.S. SHAW, is the teacher in charge, and was approached by Mr. Butler for admission of his son to the school. SHAW refused admission of BUTLER, Jr., into the school and gave as the reason- he was not a white person, being partly o f Indian descent. In response to this, BUTLER filed a complaint, August 19th, 1874 against SHAW. BUTLER, 41, who along with his Indian wife, Catharine, and his children, owned a mining claim in the Sebastopol District on the Chowchilla River near BROWN's house and store. Presently (1973) this would place the Butler residence near what has been known as the Roscoe BOWER place, on Indian Peak Road. BUTLER, a native of Ireland, was naturalized in the Mariposa County Court on August 6, 1866. SHAW was charged by law with the authority and duty, as the teacher , to admit to instruction and all benefits and advantages of the school, equally, all children residents of the district and entitled to admission to the common school of the State of California. California at this time had Reservation Schools for Indian children, however there were no Reservation schools in Mariposa. There was only the one school in the district at this time, Sebastopol, (Bootjack area)and it was an ungraded school. The Court found that: James BUTLER, Jr.., the minor child of the plaintiff was on the 10th day of August 1874, was and still is, entitled to be admitted to the public school of Sebastopol School District and that the refusal of the child as alleged in the complaint, was against the law. SHAW was commanded to admit James BUTLER, Jr.., immediately and to provide him all the rights, benefits and privileges of the public school. Judge CORCORAN's decision resulted in all Indian children in Mariposa County to be admitted to the public schools. ========= Carolyn

    1. [CAMARIPO] MARIPOSA FEE INCREASES
    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. The article below is from the Mariposa Trib (online http://mariposa.yosemite.net/tribune/index.html ) What I think is interesting is that the voters registration list is for sale! You know how we love the OLD voters lists- Carolyn New Year Brings Fee Increase by Alan Wood Mariposa County Treasurer/Tax Collector Don Phillips told the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors in a public hearing November 21st that there needed to be some changes in the fees charged for certain services offered by his office. The fees charged for selected County services is scheduled to take effect on January 2, 2000. According to Phillips, the fees that had been, needed to be increased to cover the cost of printing. According to the County Record this fee increase originally came before the Board on September 19, 2000 but was not approved at that time because it was unclear as to how much was actually being charged. County Counsel Jeff Green recommended that the request be held until a clarification could be reached. After clarifying the actual costs, the request came back before the board and gained their support. The fee increase involves services performed by the Treasurer/Tax Collector, County Clerk, Election Board and Candidate Statement fees. The fee for requesting a separate tax bill on parcels of land was $20, but will change to $5 for each assessee on each parcel. The fee charged for a fictitious name filing was $10 each plus $2 each name, with the increase it will now cost $15 plus $2 for each name. The fee for Notice to withdraw partnership will be raised from five dollars to seven dollars and fifty cents, for each request. The fee for a public marriage license will be raised from $39 to $45 and for a confidential license will be raised from forty-five dollars to fifty dollars. ******* The cost for Voter Registration Listing was $10 plus a charge of ten cents for each page printed as well as for having information placed on computer floppy disk. The new fees are $10 and one dollar for the floppy disk. Candidate statement fees will also be increased from the fees set in 1985. For filing Countywide the fees will increase from $215 to $450. The fees for filing district wide will rise from $175 to $350, which was the actual cost of printing for the 2000 primary.
