    3. Greetings to you Sue! Incredible that you mention the Huntington Library situation. I attended the California Historical Records Statewide Planning Project meeting yesterday- Central Valley group- (I see that the meeting for your area was in Sept last year- hope you were able to attend?) I had a one-on-one with the state archivist on the subject of county records falling into the hands of private institutions and the problem this can create. Access! and a comprehensive county inventory ---- He mentioned the Huntington in particular as a real issue for the researcher- just getting in the door of this institution is a real coup. I don't know the exact qualifications, but they are strict- Ph.D. required? The statement the archivist made was "once public, always public" when referring to who really owns public records. This is something to remember, when trying to locate and research at a private institution=- We have every right to see these records- at no cost other than the cost of reproducing the material. He also used a term I had never heard of: "replevin"- I had him explain it to me- Bet you and your county counsel are familiar with that term <g>~ It is good to hear from you and your counties experience. Glad to hear that, in the very least, your county records were able to be retrieved, if only in film format-. You are right, I suspect every county has probably experienced the disappearance of their public records- That is why regular County Inventories seem so important! It seems if Inventories were conducted on a regular basis the responsibility would be placed on the counties to be accountable for the retention and access of these records. There was a bit of good news reported on Alpine County-The Alpine County inventory done in 1981 found all the records that had been inventoried by Coy in 1917! 3. Greetings from El Dorado County Many of our county records are now the property of the Huntington Library thanks to one of the old county recorders. He apparently "cleaned" house, took the records home and they eventually got sold to Huntington. Such a shame when public records are to remain in the public domain to have such shenanigans going on. The County Judge's logbook, which was to be filed with the County Clerk after the judge apportioned townsite lots to private owners (patents) in platted townsites, ended up with one of our local title companies which was selling the information to surveyors and other people. Selling our public record information? Correct...We managed to get our county counsel to arrange for the county to receive microfiche copies of our public record....but not the real record itself. How many records may have existed and what may be missing from anyone's county is anyone's guess. I don't believe El Dorado County is an isolated incident. Wish we had history minded public servants in California. Maybe we wouldn't all be struggling so hard to find what we can... 3. Hi Guys- I think the significance of the article below is worth a post here-even though this happened elsewhere-it could happen anywhere~ and does~ I find two points most interesting:I 1.In reading the article below- I wonder if the county did an inventory in 1907 and then not again _ until_1995? - 2.Note that the Attorney General sought to have this PUBLIC ledger returned to the state archives- ! returning public records to the public domain! Carolyn Old public ledger, salvaged from eBay, put on display http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2001/01/17/city/JLEDGER17.htm By Marc Levy Wednesday, January 17, 2001 Philadelphia INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF MOUNT HOLLY - Burlington County officials and state historians proudly unveiled a 215-year-old public ledger that was returned last month after it went up for sale on the online trading site eBay. Accompanying officials at the Old Burlington County Jail were representatives of the Fountain of Life Center, a Christian organization based in Florence that helped return the ledger. A member of the church who has remained anonymous and the Life Center Academy, a school affiliated with the church, paid about $3,500 to Charles and Valerie Mason of Newark, Del., for the ledger. Dean Newman, dean of student affairs at the academy, said that helping to buy the ledger was a practical lesson for students in how to "improve or correct what needed to be corrected." The ledger records county land deeds and slave emancipations - or manumissions - from the 1700s. The ledger will remain in a glass display case in the jail for an undetermined time before it is sent to state archives for storage and safekeeping, County Clerk Philip E. Haines said. A state historian described the ledger as in "very good condition," despite having a loose binding. Officials have not discovered how the ledger disappeared from county archives, although it is believed to have been removed between 1907 and 1995, when officials noticed that it was missing. The Masons, who collect and trade antique toys, bought the 251-page handwritten book from a junk dealer in Delaware last year and decided to sell it on eBay. A reporter who learned that it was for sale contacted Burlington County officials. A high bid of $4,651 rolled in on eBay on Dec. 7. But before the transaction was made, a federal judge in Trenton issued a restraining order on the sale as the state Attorney General's Office sought to stop the auction and return the ledger to state archives. Less than two weeks later, the Life Center Academy came forward with the money, and a deal was struck after state archivists inspected the ledger for authenticity. Giles R. Wright, director of the Afro-American history program for the New Jersey Historical Commission, called the ledger "a very, very important document" that serves as a reminder that New Jersey was at the forefront of the emancipation. Burlington County had the largest number of free blacks of any county in New Jersey at the end of the 18th century, Wright said. "The explanation for this, of course, is the presence of the Quakers in the Delaware Valley being the first organized abolitionists," Wright said.

    2. Hello listmembers, It's nice to see you all back again!! The Rootsweb server that serves our list has been down for the past two or three days. Here was part of the message from the listmaster: "The mailing list server LISTS6 was sicker than we initially thought, so rather than have the server down for a long period, we have moved all the mailing lists that were on LISTS6 to a new server LISTS2. We had a box failure on LISTS6 and created a new list box and have transferred all information that could be safely recovered from LISTS6, and then recovered data from our back-up from last week.  Thank you for your patience and understanding while we have been dealing with this problem.  Finally a big thank you to the staff who have put aside other work and sleep to deal with this problem, especially Vicki and Doc. RootsWeb staff"  So..... some things might have been lost in the switch. If your posts didn't make it through the switch, please accept my apologies. Some lists came through without a glitch. CAMARIPO however lost all it's settings. I have reset things and hopefully all will be back to normal. Also, with this switch, some subscribers may have been unsubscribed from their lists, or resubscribed if they recently unsubscribed. (I THINK we came through OK in this regard.) If you subscribe to several lists and haven't been getting your posts, or if you are getting posts from lists that you have unsubbed from, this may be the reason. (Only ListS6 was involved.) You can check to see which lists you are subscribed to here: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ I would like to add my thanks to the Rootsweb staff's to those that worked so hard to get things repaired, recovered & restarted as quickly as they did. Now, back to things Mariposan!!! Best Regards, Sharon CAMARIPO List step-mom

    3. Don, The article on the Williams Family History was just a couple of paragraphs. Doesn't really answer your question but I found it interesting as I am always looking for people from Cornwall. Here it is in case anyone else is interested in the W. W. Williams family. From the Mariposa Gazette - 1954. "William Williams and Mary (Oliver) Williams. William Williams came from Cornwall, England to Hunter's Valley When he was a teenager in the 1850's. He gold mined, and went to Nevada with the big strike. There he met and married Mary Oliver, also a native of Cornwall. After a few years they, with three children returned to Hunter's Valley to homestead and ranch. They had thirteen children, of this number only one was a girl, May. Jean Beaudoin, who has contributed this story and use of pictures, Father was Kenneth Williams, son of William or Grandfather "Billy". Billy married Catherine McNally from Red Mountain, and Kenneth was One of nine children. Another son, Anthony remained in Hornitos, married Amelie Cademartori and had two sons, Winnie and Carvel The other children moved to Merced and other areas. Grandchildren still remaining in this area are Joan, Winnie, Harold and Wayne. There are numerous great-grandchildren." Harriet .

    3. Don, In the index to the Mariposa Gazette Commemorative 1979 heritage of law and press (by Dorothy O'Brien) there are 3 pages of Williams. One notes Williams, Mr. & Mrs W. W., 1954 (article date) "Mariposa's Early Settlers" by Mary Wass page 208, Col 1. and another titled "Williams Family History", page 208. I will try to read through the references this a.m. and get back to you in case you don't get an answer any sooner. I would love to see your picture of Fremont Peak above Bear Valley in fact any of them. Thanks, Harriet. -----Original Message----- From: Don Rose [mailto:darose@yosemite.net] Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2001 6:18 AM To: CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CAMARIPO] WILLIAMS Ranch & WILLIAMs Peak I took a hike yesterday to the fire look-out tower on WILLIAMS Peak. On the USGS Topo Map there is a WILLIAMS Ranch just below it in Hunters Valley. I assume they are connected. Does anyone know which WILLIAMS established the ranch and when? By the way, I took some pretty good digitals from the tower looking into Yosemite Valley which is about 30 crow miles away if anyone is interested. I also got a nice shot of Fremont Peak above Bear Valley where Jessie Benton FREMONT used to ascend to cool off and camp to get away from the oppressive heat in the summers.
