    3. All that is left of Quartzburg cemetery is two families graves. The Lord family who I am told still resides in or around Hornitos and the Thorn family (mine) the two families are inside a rock wall and there are about 3 or 4 Lord graves and 3 Thorn graves, one of which is Mary Fisher Sherman Thorn Hardwicks second husband George Hardwick. I have been told that there were quite a few graves there but the cattle and time have gotten rid of all the markers. There is a broken headstone outside of the rock wall I believe it was SB Allen. When the ground is dry I would be happy to take you there to see what is left, but it is a climb up a hill. My family worked in the Mount Gaines mine, as well as many other mines in the area. Quartzburg was named in 1848 When Colonel Thomas Thorn's wife, Mary named it for it's huge quartz ledge. Hope this gave you a little info. 3. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison condemned cigarettes and their users in a book entitled The Case against the Little White Slaver. In the book, Edison wrote that cigarettes produce "degeneration of the cells of the brain, which is quite rapid among boys. Unlike most narcotics this degeneration is permanent and uncontrollable. I employ no person who smokes cigarettes." -----Original Message----- From: Ruth - Sacramento@ Mindspring <ruth4527@mindspring.com> To: CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com <CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, February 10, 2001 9:17 PM Subject: RE: [CAMARIPO] Changing times"CIGARETTES" >How interesting!!!! 2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. Well, isn't this interesting- I decided to visit our counterpart GenWeb site for Van Buren County- Iowa-- sure enough they have a burb on their county courthouse-! http://www.rootsweb.com/~iavanbur/chousevbcgs.htm This is the tidbit I was looking for: The Van Buren Courthouse in Keosauqua is the oldest courthouse in Iowa which has remained in continuous use and the second oldest in the United States to hold that distinction. When finished in 1843, it was one of the largest buildings west of the Mississippi River. =================== Notice that they do say continuous use- but they also say, second oldest to hold that distinction!!! Just like genealogy- history also has you going from one question to another.... but the quest is sure fun! 2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. http://cjonline.com/stories/030299/kan_courthouse.shtml The Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls can keep its designation as the oldest functioning courthouse in Kansas. But, contrary to a story in the Feb. 21 Topeka Capital-Journal and other claims, it isn't the oldest courthouse still in use west of the Mississippi River. Not by a long shot. Astute readers alerted The Capital-Journal that a story about the courthouse was inaccurate. There are several courthouses still being used this side of Old Man River that are older than the historic building in Chase County, which is now in its 126th year. ( Now skipping down through the story , there is, of course, mention of the Mariposa Courthouse- built 1854-) But that's not the most interesting part- if like me you have seen the claim that the Mariposa Court House is the "oldest Court House in continuos use west of the Mississippi" then this will interest you............ the article goes on to say: And the oldest still-functioning courthouse west of the Mississippi uncovered in The Capital-Journal's informal survey? The 156-year-old building located in VanBuren County in Keosaqua, Iowa.. ======================= Does anyone have Pinkerton and Radonovich's Mariposa Court House Book? Do they make the claim that Mariposa is the oldest Courthouse in continuous use in California, or West of the Mississippi? Thanks, Carolyn

    1. [CAMARIPO] Cemetery access
    2. Jim McMillen
    3. Carolyn, In Texas a cemetery is generally not private land, but access to it may be across private land. You have a legal right to be in any cemetery for several specified purposes, but the surrounding land owner may deny you access. I don't know whether anyone has tested any landowners by flying in by helicopter. In some areas that could be quite dangerous. Cheers, Jim

    3. Hi Sue- thanks so much for sharing information about the California Historic Cemetery Alliance with us here on the Mariposa list- I certainly have an interest in how the legislation is proceeding- The one thing I am also concerned about is that cemeteries on private land- by that I mean on deeded ranches etc. in the area are protected from citizens coming on their land without consent- ranchers in our area tell stories of their rock walls coming down, stone by stone, and private cemetery items disappearing- metal detector digging,etc.. I am most interested this statement: >Most people don't realize that California law provided that title to these old >cemeteries vested in the public by way of the codified statutes of 1872. If >your county is not claiming it as public land, they're saying it's privately >owned and this is not so. If anyone would like further information about these >early laws, please contact me direct. 3. Hi Ray- and all == Reading through some great little tidbits on the Mines and Mineral Resources of Mariposa- 1915 Mines and Mineral Resources, California State Mining Bureau-- I find- page 175- Granite- Granite abounds in large quantities in Mariposa County of the same variety as the famous granite at Raymond in Madera county but it is so far from transportation that it is not able to compete at present with more favorably situated. A granite property consisting of 50 acres of patented land located in Sec 30, T. 6 S. R. 19 E., M.D.M. was located in 1906 by Guido VIGNALO but was deeded to the State in taxes. It is 1.5 miles by wagon road frm Raymond and the granite is the same as that of the Raymond granite but is not being worked- Best, Carolyn
