    1. [CAMARIPO] TRABUCCO FAMILIES?!
    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. Hi Folks, I heard something at the Mariposa History center that interested and surprised me. I was told that there are three different TRABUCCO families that lived in Mariposa County- and that they were NOT related. to each other..... Since I am not a TRABUCCO researcher, I was pretty amazed to hear this. Can any of you folks confirm or disprove this? Best, Carolyn

    3. Hi Pam, fun to meet you yesterday at the Mariposa History Center- You will hear from Jim McMillan (listmember here on CAMARIPO) on the SNELLING family- he has written a book on the family. My question is how do I reach the "Old Snelling Courthouse Historical Society"? Email address, or a name to contact? My last visit to SNELLING I only found a **very** small library, and it did not contain anything of historical value- ( at least that I could find- ) The library was just reopening after "down time" so perhaps there is more there now?? 3. opps ---- Post from Bob to Mary Ashworth Phelan Hi Mary - Good to meet you. Hope you, and your cuzins, don't mind; but I just have to post for our new list a great story about your greatgrandfather, D. C. ASHWORTH, from Benjamin B. Harris' book "The Texas Argonauts and the California Gold Rush"(ed. Sutro Librarian Richard Dillon,Norman: U of OK Press 1960). I think there's little doubt that your D.C. and my ggf J.R. NORRIS were Mariposa acquaintances. Anyway, lawyer Harris, reminiscencing about early Mariposa residents, includes this super 1850[?] story - of which I am sure you are aware:-); towit: "D.C. ASHWORTH possessed much shrewdness and horse sense, was a dead rifle shot, never borrowed but always formed his own opinions, and, withall, was utterly without book knowledge and barely able to write his name. In reply to a query, he averred that the origin of gold in California was due to its being 'thrown up by volcanic corruptions and clandestinely hid all over the country.' Hearing the County Clerk [probably Samuel A. Merrrit[t] - my ggf's good friend] and myself avow that the sun was stationary and that the world revolved, pronouncing us fools first, he then screwed his rifle in a vise aimed at the sun, which, some hours later, showed to be out of gun line "He nasally reported the fact that the sun had MOVED, that the rifle never lied, savagely daring anybody to challenge its veracity. He argumentatively added that if the world turned over when it got upside down it would spill all the water from the wells and there would be the 'da__est scatterment of people you ever seed in all your born days.' 'Besides,' he added, 'I drove an ox-team all the way from Missoury and never saw it rounded off,'"[:-))))] CAMARIPO-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Subject: > > CAMARIPO-D Digest Volume 01 : Issue 43 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [CAMARIPO] OLE JR= SEBASTOPOL SCHO ["Carolyn Feroben" <Sweetwater@Sier] > #2 [CAMARIPO] SAINT JOSEPH CEMETERY ["Carolyn Feroben" <Sweetwater@Sier] > #3 Re: [CAMARIPO] SAINT JOSEPH CEMETE ["Don Rose" <darose@yosemite.net>] > > Administrivia: > To unsubscribe from CAMARIPO-D, send a message to > > CAMARIPO-D-request@rootsweb.com > > that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > > and no other text. 1. Re: [CAMARIPO] Military Records
    2. Sharon, This service from NARA is really excellant, however, ask for PENSION records as well as military records. Military records seldom have much. Pension records, however are chock-full of really great info. My great-grandfather had to list all of his children "living or dead" and their dates of birth, his wife's name and their date of marriage, if she was living or dead and the date of her death if no longer living. Among all the papers were medical documents, affidavits from character witnesses and letters from his children to the gov't. His military record, on the other hand, had one little piece of paper that told which company and regiment he had served in and when. Whenever I go back to DC, I always am willing to do lookups in the Nat'l Archives. If you are on-site, this information is free and the copier is 10c per page. Best Regards, Sharon CAMARIPO List step-mom

    1. [CAMARIPO] INDIAN DEATHS-
    2. Carolyn Feroben
    3. Here is a summary of some information found in the Tuolumne Gen Society bulletin- sorry no date!! The information in this article is stated as being bits of information gathered from many sources- below are the Indian folks from the article- THE PIONEER CEMETERY IN YOSEMITE VALLEY- Cremation was practiced by the Ahwahneechees living in re-discovery Yosemite. The last cremation ceremony was held on the death of a nephew of Chief One-Eye DICK, killed in 1873 in a hunting accident. Earliest recorded Indian burial was Kosano or Torch Bearer, father of Ta-bu-ce. Sally Ann CASTAGNETO- died April 12, 9134- Sally Ann DICK CASTAGNETO full blooded Yosemite. Father Indian DICK mother Mary DICK. One of the most beautiful of Yosemite Indians. First husband STEGMAN. Second marriage to Johnny BROWN. Johnny CASTAGNETTO operated the Hennessey ranch near mariposa and sold vegetables in the valley. He became sick and moved to Coulterville- Sally Ann went to nurse him. Mother of Lucy- Part Yosemite- little know about the mother of Indian Lucy BROWN- early photos indicate she must have been very old when she died. May TOM- aged 14- Piute. May TOM was the niece of TA-Bu-ce (Maggie HOWARD) She was killed by a falling tree while camping with her aunt. Ta-bu-ce's leg was broken in the accident and she remained lame. May TOM died about 1905. Ta-bu-ce made acorn cakes for visitors and was a fine basket weaver. She was buried at Bishop California- late in January 1947. May DICK- Yosemite May Dick, mother of Sally Ann CASTAGNETTO, was full blooded Yosemite. Her husband Indian DICK, but wood for early valley settlers. Grandmother of Lucy TELLES- Susie SAM, Lucy TELLES grandmother, was a Yosemite born in the valley. Her husband was Captain SAM- he supplied fish for Camp Curry and the Sentinel Hoot., Susie SAM died August about 1904. Lucy- died 1920= Part Yosemite Lucy BROWN or Indian Lucy, said to be close to 120 years old at death. One of the last Indians who was in the valley at it's discovery in 1851. She was the oldest of six generations. Her husband was Bill BROWN. She was cousin to Maria LEBRADO. Lucy's death is recorded as 1924. Bill BROWN- died 1899- Yosemite- Bill BROWN or Mono Tom BROWN was the husband of Lucy BROWN- father of Johnny, grandfather of Chris BROWN. He was one of the first Indians buried in the Yosemite Cemetery. Lancisco WILSON died 1885- Piute. He was father of Johnny WILSON. His Indian name was Tu-tok-a-nu-la, the inch worm that legend says climbed El Capital. Lancisco WILSON was one the old Yosemite chiefs and was approximately 115 when he died. Johnny BROWN- died 1934- Yosemite- Johnny BROWN was born about 1860-. First married Sally Ann DICK= second wife Lena BROWN- they had four children, Chris, Virgil, Alves and Hazel. Chris BROWN (Chief Lee-mee) was named for artist Chris JORGENSEN. Chris BROWN and Lizzie, last surveying Nutchu, performed Indian rites at Johnny BROWN's burial. (Note from Carolyn= see Obit for Chris BROWN on the Mariposa Obits site) Pete HILLIARD 1870-1934 Pete HILLIARD part Yosemite- John Baptista BACIGALUPI said his father was Chinese. Pete lived most of his life in the he valley and worked for the government- When his sister , Louisa WESTFALL HILLIARD, died she was near 100. Louisa TOM- 1856- Louisa TOM asked to be buried at the Yosemite Valley Cemetery with her family- Hers will probably be the last burin in this cemetery- Her passing (note no date given) was marked by an old time Indian 'cry'. ====================

    3. Sue, I just found this in The Ahwahneechee's Book. Tom Lupton born 1834, one of the original Yosemite Indians in the Valley in 1851 when it was discovered by the white man, was buried in an Indian cemetery which is at the foot of Lebrado Mountain. He was buried about 1928.

    3. Maybe I'm the last genealogy hunter to find this out...but I'm going to share it anyway, because I just found out about this and I'm pretty excited. You can request your dead ancestors COMPLETE military file. From what I understand this file could be small...or could contain correspondence written by the ancestor, interviews with his neighbors..background checks...possibly even a picture! Most probably it will contain information about his family...parents, siblings. Here is a link to the Form 180: http://www.nara.gov/regional/mprsf180.html I have faxed my request in for my husband's difficult Slovenian grandfather. I believe they told me the turn around time is about 4 months but since I have tried to find information on this branch for over a year with no luck...that sounded pretty darn good to me! Plus, if I recall correctly, the cost of all this was about $10. Sharon
