Carolyn, I saw a documentary on the U.S. Mint and the gold rush on the History Channel sometime back. It seems that private mints were opened and used although it was not really legal. They had great difficulty getting coinage from the east Coast to the West Coast. Gold was heavy and transportation to a legal mint very slow and cumbersome. Shipping at the beginning of the Rush was a problem too. So I believe a fellow in San Francisco (banker) opened the Other Mint. The coins made there were acceptable coinage. In fact people copied it in lead and dipped in gold--first case of counter fit money and believe that was what the 'slug' was. Later the S.F. mint was opened. Perhaps if you check the USMINT.gov (something like that) you would be able to find out. While Moffat was a major stockholder in the Merced Mining Company, which had purchased Quartz Johnsons Mount Ophir mine on March 4 of 1851, there is no evidence to support the story of a mint being located at Mount Ophir. Pam-----Since I had never heard of the Sierra Sky Ranch so I did a quick net search I see it is a wonderful place- Makes me want to take a ride right over there! Photos: http://www.yosemitefilm.com/sierra.htm The only history I saw was this blurb---.I hope you might be able to tell us more!! Some History of the Sierra Sky Ranch---- http://www.sierrastar.com/past/10-27-99/1027ghost.html It all began in 1876. The property was rough like a camp. The owners name was Caster. By 1898 the ranch was the largest cattle ranch in California. The main ranch house was then built and still remains today. This ranch was the main supplier of vegetables, fruit and meat to the surrounding area. The owners had more than 7,000 acres, 4,000 head of cattle and more than 200 ranch hands. At this time of the century their home was like a mansion. Hard times fell on Mr. Caster in the late 1920s and he sold quite a lot of land off. By 1934 the ranch was down to a few hundred acres. At this time the kitchen was outside. A ranch hand named Elmer was still working the ranch. He had been a hard-working, loyal hand. The ranch was sold to the state to be a tuberculosis sanitarium. Elmer was so depressed about this that he committed suicide by cutting himself and bled to death on the ranch. The state put a small kitchen in with a very small eating area. This sanitarium was set up for all ages from children with tuberculosis to adults. There was an older nurse named Sarah who was about 50 years old. Sarah took her job very seriously. Most of the patients were very ill with the advanced stages of the disease and Sarah had taken a special interest in two child patients. They were critical. These two children died downstairs in her room. Shortly after their deaths, Sarah died, too. They say she died from tuberculosis. In 1942 the Army bought the property. It was set up for WW II patients who needed to rest. Some of the men were amputees and very wounded. The Army built a large mess hall which became the present steak house. A huge kitchen was built. Pam, The 100 year anniversary (2003)of Teddy Roosevelt's trip to the area is coming up as you probably know- there is much excitement about the reenactment of his visit- I know historical wagon masters are making plans for duplicating his route into the park- from Raymond on up===Some of Our Historic Sites and Records Preservation Commission members are involved- I wonder if the folks at the Yosemite Research Center may have the history and location of the Roosevelt stops?! In Mariposa we have an extensive survey of historical properties in our inventory- Does Madera have such an inventory? In 1894 the United States experienced its first epidemic of poliomyelitis, then called acute paralysis or Heine-Medin disease. During the summers, of the 1930's Epidemics swept around the U.S. It left 27,000 people dead and thousands of people paralyzed. http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Clinical_Neurosciences/articles/sa3594.html I was among the 1956 kids who benefited from the Salk vaccine- ! It was pretty scary back then- no swimming in public, etc.. I had a couple of friends who contracted the disease- but luckily were not severely affected , however, it was causing them some problems in the 1980's! Hello, The Bill number is correct as AB 1368. I urge anyone interested in seeking preservation of our state's earliest cemeteries to review the bill's language and contact Assemblyman Anthony Pescetti and your own legislative representatives about this bill. It is a bill designed to review conditions and problems and to attempt to assist those who may be trying to preserve and restore these places of rest. Governor Davis vetoed this same language last year and his office again has advised he continues to oppose it. Yet it passed nearly unanimously in both houses last year. I do not believe Davis' vetoe reflected the desire of the people. We need to tell him so. Dear CAMARIPO listers, Normally, we do not discuss virus problems on this list. However, I am making an exception because this particular virus-worm is affecting some Rootsweb lists. Please be aware that I may temporarily unsubscribe infected machines to prevent further spread if necessary. If you have questions, please email me off-list. As many Rootsweb mail list subscribers know, it is impossible to receive an attachment born virus from Rootsweb because the list servers at Rootsweb remove all attachments before sending a posting onto a list. Nonetheless, some of the larger Rootsweb lists are currently having problems due a new virus called W32 Bad Trans, which is spread subscriber to subscriber in a new and novel way. This virus and its variants are of special concern to list subscribers. This virus targets users of Outlook email programs, and rather than send a copy of the virus to all the email addresses in the address book as in past, it sends a virus to all the email addresses that are in unopened email in the Inbox. For example, if subscriber A posts to a list and subscriber B has an infected computer, subscriber A will get a virus induced response from subscriber B that will contain a virus in the attachment. More worrisome, is that subscriber A anticipating a response may eagerly open the attachment only to find a virus that now infects their machine and the process of a widening infection continues. I know some subscribers are on many lists and it is a special hazard for them. Needless to say you will want to make doubly sure your virus protection software is updated and be especially careful when opening attachments. McAfee has issued the following information on this virus. McAfee - AVERT Profile Virus Name Risk Assessment W32/Badtrans@MM Low Virus Characteristics This mass mailing worm attempts to send itself using Microsoft Outlook by replying to unread email messages. It also drops a remote access trojan (detected as Backdoor-NK.svr with the 4134 DATs; detected heuristically as New Backdoor prior to the 4134 DAT release). When run, the worm displays a message box entitled, "Install error" which reads, "File data corrupt: probably due to a bad data transmission or bad disk access." A copy is saved into the WINDOWS directory as INETD.EXE and an entry is entered into the WIN.INI file to run INETD.EXE at startup. KERN32.EXE (a backdoor trojan), and HKSDLL.DLL (a valid keylogger DLL) are written to the WINDOWS SYSTEM directory, and a registry entry is created to load the trojan upon system startup. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ RunOnce\kernel32=kern32.exe Once running, the trojan attempts to mail the victim's IP Address to the author. Once this information is obtained, the author can connect to the infected system via the Internet and steal personal information such as usernames, and passwords. In addition, the trojan also contains a keylogger program which is capable of capturing other vital information such as credit card and bank account numbers and passwords. The next time Windows is loaded, the worm attempts to email itself by replying to unread messages in Microsoft Outlook folders. The worm will be attached to these messages using one of the following filenames (note that some of these filenames are also associated with other threats, such as W95/MTX.gen@M): Card.pif docs.scr fun.pif hamster.ZIP.scr Humor.TXT.pif images.pif New_Napster_Site.DOC.scr news_doc.scr Me_nude.AVI.pif Pics.ZIP.scr README.TXT.pif s3msong.MP3.pif searchURL.scr SETUP.pif Sorry_about_yesterday.DOC.pif YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif The message body may contain the text: Take a look to the attachment. AVERT first received an intended version of this worm (10,623 bytes) on April 11 from a company in New Zealand. (c) 2001, Network Associates, Inc. and its affiliated Companies. All Rights Reserved. Le Grand Advocate, Friday, May 27, 1927 LOCAL ITEMS A Los Angeles firm is having two cars of "Whiterock" quartz shipped from Whiterock on the J. H. Helm place in the foothills, to Los Angeles. They will grind the quartz to a powder and test it for the making of door knobs, bathtubs, dishes etc. If it fills the bill, our well known "Whiterock" will disappear as a landmark. It has given its name to a section of Mariposa County. Located at the edge of the foothills, it stands out prominently and can be seen down on the plains for many miles. -- Thomas and Paulette Hilk 1725 Wildwood Ct. Thank you both for your replies. So you actually had a screen asking info Marie? Hmmm I wonder then why I managed to get the page to come in this morning and get that strange "coming soon" page. Oh well..I just wanted to know if I was wasting my time. I'm glad to know it's really there...somewhere...and that I'm not the only person up at 3 am trying LOLOL Sharon
I read the press releases saying that the website http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ was opened the 17th. I tried repeatedly to get the site up but continually get the message: Thank you for your interest in the American Family Immigration History Center at ellisislandrecords.org Due to an extraordinary number of visitors, we must limit access to the site. Please keep trying, or check back later. I got up at 3 am and thought I'd have a chance getting on and after a couple attempts, the page DID come in...only to have it say the same as it has said for months now "COMING SOON". Does anyone know what the real deal is? Is the difficulty in getting the page to come in merely because word of mouth has made people think it is up and running when in fact, it isn't yet??? thanks Sharon

Hi folks, The San Joaquin Library System is providing the funds and the equipment for the libraries and research centers in their system to digitilize their historical photos collections. The benefits seem many fold- The benefit of having these put on CD's will also allow them to be brought to the net! Presentations are being made to the research centers (Yosemite, Coulterville, Mariposa History Center/Museum) our county libraries, and the Historic Sites and Records Preservation Commission by our local Head Librarian, Jacque Merriam, who is heading up this project for Mariposa County.
