    1. [CAMARIPO] Ellis Island records
    2. rubyslippers
    3. I would like to share with all of you about what can be found at the new Ellis Island records site. It is THE most exciting genealogical find since I began this madness...er....hobby. ;) I know it is very difficult to get into the site, but it sure is worth it. I'd set the clock for the middle of the night and try then. Once you have found an ancestor and clicked on their name, hit the bar named "ship manifest", after that, if there is a notation above this that says to see "original manifest"...hit that. It is the actual manifest and may be more than one page so you might have to negotiate forward or backward to see it all. It has information that includes their specific residence, birthplace, relatives where they came from and who they are meeting often including a specific address, a physical description, occupation and how much money they had on them. I noticed today that manifests that showed previously are not showing up so do not assume it is not available...try later. It took me several trips to the site to finally find the odd spelling the person at Ellis assigned the relatives. Think phonetic!!!! My great-great grandmother arrived at Ellis in 1907 with a 2 year old. The other 7 children were left behind and came later. I found one ship with 4 of them including babies 11 and 9 a whole year later. I can't even imagine this. She was headed for Neche, North Dakota...and had $2 on her!!!!!! Just wanted to share this. Good Luck! Sharon

    3. Hello, Thanks to George Rushton for sending this out in San Francisco. Ironically, in their effort to "cut corners" the city saved itself money and supposedly the current developer is going to have to bear the burden for these relocations. Had the city done the job properly in the first place we wouldn't be watching excavators in old cemeteries only stopping when or if the next body is "seen." History does, indeed, repeat itself... 3. Sue, I would consult the holding of the California Supreme Court in "In re Lifschutz, 467 P.2d 557, Cal. 1970. Under the rational of that and other holdings, I think you might find that the privilege of privacy belongs to the PATIENT, and not a physician, etc. I think you might also find that the right extinquishes with death. Under this reasoning, I don't see why the records would not be available. Please let me emphasize, this is a totally NON-legal opinion. It's just a suggestion of a place to go you might find interesting. ;) Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Silver" <ssilver1951@jps.net> To: <CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 11, 2001 11:17 AM Subject: [CAMARIPO] Re: [CASANFRA] Old Stockton Insane Asylum Cemetery > Hello, > > I recently ran into the problem of locating information from the Stockton > State Hospital Records. 3. Hello, I recently ran into the problem of locating information from the Stockton State Hospital Records. I contacted the California State Archives, which appears to have the records. I was told they were confidential patient records and could not be viewed by the public. The information I was seeking was relative to a man who died at the hospital. I was attempting to verify if he was buried at the hospital cemetery or if he was sent home for burial and now lies in an unmarked grave. I could not find this information out. I ultimately asked if the Archivist would support legislation enabling researchers to have access to these records after a specific, statutorial period of time, such as that which the federal census utilizes. He did not seem to oppose this idea but related he thought the legislators might have a difficult time with all the requests for more protections on privacy. Do we have enough support out there to push for legislation allowing access after 70 years, for instance?
