Sharon= What a wonderful opportunity to for me to say thank you to our family that has served our country, and to all those who have served-----------------! My father served as a Marine in WWII- he was in the Pacific-and made it home! My first love gave his life in Viet Nam, a chopper pilot shot down and killed at the age of 20, 1964. He is buried at Golden Gate Memorial, and the 280 Freeway dedication of Blue Star Memorial Highway was done by his mother- he was their only son. My husband was an Air Force Instructor during the Viet Nam era, staying stateside. My husbands family's service to this country dates back to the Revolutonary War (Captain John BLAKENEY and Captain ANDERSON). Numerous family served in the Civil War- It is nice that one of the local Mariposa Eagle Scouts has put veterans symbols on the graves of those who have served. This was a project completed just a few years ago. To all of our listmembers and their families who have served, THANK YOU! I have a copy of a map that I got from the Library of Congress with Grant Springs... " Map of Mariposa County California compiled and issued by the State Mining Bureau, Ferry Building, San Francisco, Lewis E. Aubury, State Mineralogist. December. 1903." It was a stop on the Raymond to Wawona stage line. Hank Johnston in his work THE YOSEMITE GRANT: 1864-1906 Has Fred & Isabella LEIDIG managing " Grant's White Sulphur Springs Hotel" in the summer of 1889. It was on the original road form Raymond to Wawona Leroy Radanovich says that Judge Grant was from Miami, OH, for which the Judge named Miami Mountain and Miami Creek. The Hotel was near the Mariposa and Madera County line. The spring was a sulphur spring. I think I asked this before and never got an answer. How/where do I get an immigration record? thank you Sharon
Hi Sharon, This post from Ken Tessendorff of 12/14/2000 is pretty much the answer you seek (if you are looking for Naturalization papers - is that what you meant?). --------------- A simple letter or phone call to Alameda should work, but you definitely need the form for the INS. Complete instructions for obtaining naturalization documents from the INS are on the NORCAL Genealogy Index http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/norcallib.html and should be followed to the letter for best results. Please note that the request should always be sent directly to the Washington DC office and never to a local office of the INS. It is sometimes a good idea to obtain copies of the documents from both the INS and the county (or NARA as the case may be). Although the documents are supposed to be identical, I obtained documents from both places for one of my ancestors and found them to contain different information. It should also be noted that some counties in California are VERY hard to deal with when trying to get these documents. San Mateo county is a good example. Sometimes the INS is our only option. I really don't know what the situation is in Alameda county, but hope they are more cooperative than some other counties. If it turns out that your ancestor's documents may be at a National Archives branch, there is another article on the NORCAL Genealogy Index http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/norcallib.html that covers that place. Ken T. --------------- Guess you have already checked the Ellis Island site for folks arriving there (1892-1924) - I found Don's family there!! http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ Good luck, RUTH ________________ Ruth Grady Skewis ruth4527@mindspring.com > -----Original Message----- > From: rubyslippers [mailto:rubyslippers@kc.rr.com] > Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2001 12:10 PM > To: CAMARIPO-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CAMARIPO] Immigration > > > I think I asked this before and never got an answer. I'm searching through old posts and I found one from Melanie: MILITA ROLLS starting in 1861. The actual title to the fiche is missing, but handwritten is "Listing of Pensions (or persons ) of Military Duty " It is in Alpha order according to districts with names of disticts stated as HD and NS. 1861 ends on page 53 and then the title for the next section starts with "Persons eligible for duty dated Aug 4, 1862" I copied just a few of the "known to me names" from the 1861 files ALLEN John ALLEN Thomas ALLEN William ALLEN Charles John ALLEN being of course a brick wall of mine. What kind of information is available...and how do I get it??
here is a map that helps to locate Jerseydale- http://www.highlandhousebandb.com/index2.html It is a higher elevation then the general town area of Mariposa- it is also Forest Service land-very beautiful- Tom Hilk had family in the early days in this area- perhaps he has more to share...
