I just checked May 1906 and not only found an obit for my ggggrandfather Maurice Murray, but also found lots of info on one of my gggrandmother's sisters that I didn't have before. (Mary Murray Rihn lost her husband and her father within a week. :( Thanks for this great resource, Bill! Leslie Devlin * Putting the "there" in Oakland since 1999 * mizd@tsoft.com

    3. An amazing project that William has completed-! And what a resource to Mariposa researchers- There are links on the Mariposa GenWeb vitals pages (birth, marriages, and obits ) leading over to Williams Gazette data bases----- this now completes the 1854- 1923 data base coverage! Thanks to William and all of you who have contributed to these pages! 1. [CAMARIPO] STAYNER PRELIMINARY HEARING-MARIPOSA-
    2. carolyn feroben
    3. Folks, one of the biggest murder cases in many years is about to begin tomorrow in Mariposa. Cary Stayners preliminary hearing for the murders of Carole and Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso begin tomorrow. The federal case againt Stayner for the murder of Joie Armstrong (Yosemite Park naturialist) never reached trial. Stayner pled qulity to killing Armstrong in exchange for a" life without the possibility of parole" sentence in feederal prison. Stayner has been in the Mariposa County jail since December when he was arrainged on the murder charges and he entered a not guilty plea. At this time requests for cameras in the courtroom are being evaluated- Court TV is one of the applicants- There is going to be a motion for change of venue- basesd on the size of our jury pool , and the pretrial publicity. As you know , our courthouse is almost 154 years old- and something that you must not miss when visiting Mariposa. Recently I examined the courthouse with our local historian , and author of "Shrine to Justice, The Mariposa Courthouse", Scott Pinkerton. Twice a year, our Historic Sites and Records Preservation Commission, Mariposa County Building Department, and our Public Works Engineer explore the Courthouse to see that all mainentance and upkeep is done and see if there are new issues that require attention regarding the structure. It is a pleasure to see that the courthouse is very well cared for , after 154 years. Carolyn

    3. Thanks for the offer Carolyn - P. McElliott was the undertaker for my GG grandparents funerals. However, the only gravesites I have found for the Thomas Hodgson family are Joseph, Elizabeth and John's. All at one site in the Mariposa Public Cemetery. According to the Mariposa Gazette articles, Thomas (the immigrant from England), b. 1817, d. Jan. 11, 1900 - Morman Bar, buried in the Mariposa Public Cemetery and his wife Margaret, b. 1828 England, d. July 3, 1906 - Raymond. Also buried in the Mariposa Public Cemetery. The Parks and Rec dept records on the Cemetery don't show them nor Bertha Schroeder's records. Certainly they would have been buried with/near their children as they died at a later date. The next place to search would be the undertaker's records. (Hopefully, there might be some indication of the grave site locations)??????? Her funeral was conducted by P. McELLIGOTT of Mariposa. Any help appreciated!!!!!!!!!! Mary

    1. [CAMARIPO] 1850 letter
    2. Paulette Hilk
    3. HI All I am posting a copy of a letter just sent from Leon Moore in Arkansas. This letter was written by my Great Great Grandfather to his wife in 1850 and part of the letter was printed in the Arkansas Gazette. ------- Arkansas Gazette, March 29, 1850, p. 2, col. 3. Part of a letter written by Benjamin Wills, Jr. to his wife from Aqua Freo, California January 6, 1850, that was published in the Arkansas Gazette: Aqua Freo. Jan. 6, 1850 I believe we are bound to do well if we can keep our health and are industrious. We have been at these diggins since Dec. 5th. In one month we obtained enough gold to buy our provisions for the winter, and today we have a surplus of three hundred dollars. Howell's mess, Vandegrift and Col. Joiner's all encamped within a few steps of us. They are all in good health and doing will. They have all so far had better luck than we have had. Howell's mess (sic) found a rich pocket in a few days after they got here and they have taken out about one thousand dollars. Hutcherson and Calvin Donahoo are working together. (The gold is here and aplenty of it.) In our trip we saw a great many thing strange and new to us. Some of the views from hills and valleys were magnificent. We saw the great plain five or six hundred miles in extent. Also many herds of buffaloes, antelope, the mountain sheep, wild horses, the elk, and the Indians of various tribes. [ Mr. Wills makes no mention of having seen the elephant.] I think I shall be at home by next Christmas. Ben Wills -- Thomas and Paulette Hilk 1725 Wildwood Ct. 3. James Patrick McElligott was the undertaker, He was my gr grandfather. I don't know the name of the funeral parlor, but when we cleaned out his sheds after he died there were suitcases and boxes with peoples belongings in them. I am assuming that the next of kin never claimed the stuff. There wasn't anything of value, just some clothes and such.
