This short note is found in the Mariposa Gazette Centennial Edition-1854-1954 A lone Nego grave remains to tell the story of around a hundred Negroes who lived at the north edge of town and had their own school house. Aunt Dinah CARUTHERS operated a restaurant where the 49er now is. ========= Does anyone know: the name of this school? the location of this lone grave? anthing further on this section of town? The North end of town is the area where the current 49er market is located- right across the road (Highway 49) from the Mariposa Cemetery which includes Public, Masonic and IOOF sections. Best, Carolyn

Hi Bev, There are many such search engines but I prefer this one because you can even enter a cemetery name and it will locate it. http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Don Beverly Stone wrote: > Isn't there a site whereby one can enter a city to get the county it is > in? > > ==== CAMARIPO Mailing List ==== > Search the List Archives: > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > or threaded archives here: > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CAMARIPO
Isn't there a site whereby one can enter a city to get the county it is in?
Hi Folks-------- I have just received this query to post to the Mariposa Query Site:---------- http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/maripqur.htm If you can help please contact the researcher direct-they are not subscribed to this list. Thanks, Carolyn http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/maripqur.htm Surname - CAYNOR Would like to find addition information on the couple listed in the following article. February 4, 1893 Mariposa Gazette CAYNOR- COOP- At Madera, January 26th, 1893, Mr. John W. CAYNOR and Miss Belle COOP. Both the high contracting parties of the above ceremony are well known in Mariposa, the groom having spent most of his life amid our mountains, while the bride was born and raised within a few miles of the village. Mr. CAYNOR is now a resident of Fresno, of which city he is one of the moneyed men. Many friends here in his old home wish him and his fair bride a happy life. Faye Caynor caynor@netpath.net
How far back do funeral records go in Mariposa? Has anyone uncovered the funeral parlor records? I'm assuming that back in the 1870 era there was probably just one funeral parlor in town? Sharon
Hello all, Just got a chance to tour the Santa Ynez Historical Museum in Santa Ynez. Santa Ynez is north of Santa Barbara. They have a wonderfull western collection and a great collection of carriages. I was very surprised to see that they had an original Yosemite/Wawona stagecoach. It was in great condition and I had never seen one before. So if you ever get a chance to go there it would be well worth a trip!
Hi folks- we have a new list member--------- This is her querry------- I am attempting to find information on Arthur Gordon Ellis. He settled in Coulterville in the early 1870's, left and settled in North Forkin the late 1890's. He was from New York and married to Dora Wagner. He was a tax collector in Mariposa County. I would appreciate any information or records you can provide. Thank you. Andrea ============== Hope we can help you Andrea- and welcome to the list......... Carolyn
Carolyn, To whoever sent in the information about Perle Westfall Cronkite: I remember my grandmother fondly talking (all my life) about "Aunt Perle." I believe Perle was the person who married and had trouble keeping her teaching job when she divorced? My grandmother, Eleanor Trabucco Westfall, had much admiration about her how she raised her children. carole

A researcher viewing the Mariposa Masonic Cemetery Listing has sent in this correction: . Perle Westfall Cronkite listed in your Masonic section of Mariposa Cemetery after her son Charles Cronkite (correctly dated) was actually born 21 Aug 1881, Buckhannon WV, and died 13 Jan 1971 in Alameda Co, CA. She was a teacher and my grandmother. My aunts and mother had her cremated and placed in a corner of the plot with a memorial stone. It would be easy to get confused perhaps because of the others buried in the same plot. http://cagenweb.com/mariposa/MASONCEM.html Carolyn

Hi Beverly, I have not been actively researching the McELLIGOTT line, since it is not a blood line, but since Charles F.'s mother was a GUEST and my 1st cuz Irene Lord married into the GUEST line, I have been recording the info I run across on the McELLIGOTT and GUEST lines. Ellen A. Jones, daughter of Rose Prairie (my great aunt) and George Washington Jones, married (date unknown) Charles F. McElligott. From death cert and obituary, Charles F. is buried at IOOF in "Fresno." Also, I would be interested in being in touch with the person researching these names. **Beverly
Does anyone have a Hiram Wilson in their family? He would have been born probably before 1897...how much before, I just don't know Thanks Sharon
Bill Disbro has to close his archives. There is a message at this site: http://www.forumboard.net/2003/
Carolyn, One of our local mortuaries allowed us to make xerox copies of their oldest records. They allowed us to copy to 1975 or so, in order to allow a respectful number of years to have elapsed for present living persons not to feel uncomfortable. It has helped us tremendously. Perhaps someone in Mariposa County might have success in discussing such copies for your historical society or ???
