obvious cut and paste error- the book is by Shirley Sargent- the "Hart" refers to the person who was doing the recollecting! Sorry for any confusion-:) Carolyn Carolyn Feroben wrote: > Sharon- here you go! > > Page 43 Enchanted Childhoods, by Sargent Hart > ================== > Part of his trouble , he realized, ws that the only Indian he knew was a > half-breed named Pete Hilliard. Here is a very interesting site to answer that question: http://www.ourtimelines.com/ Lately I have been studying the laws surrounding Indian indenture, etc. When I put in a timeline that included this period, I see two events...Dred Scott and Darwin's book...that set a nice background. This site is a fun way to see what was going on in the life of your ancestor and experience some real insight into their times. Sharon
Upon seeing the list you had of Mariposans that were in stories on this site, Anne De Neves (Mother was a Prairie) was an ancestor of mine. Went to the site and found the story. Interesting, though marriage date was incorrect. Thank you!!!
F. Prairie - bin 50 and 63 (no papers in Bin #63). -- What does this mean??? My great-grandfather was Frank Prairie, died 1908, Indian Gulch, Mariposa. his son, Frank Prairie, died 1959 in Santa Clara County. Do you have the phone number of the courthouse? Per your suggestion, I will call them.. As to Laudram Colony, the informantion I have in my notes is as follows: " Laudram Colony - North on Quniley. (Hwy 140 goes north & south of it) Laudram Colony is located off Quniley. Portuguese people still in the area. " **Beverly
Let me start by saying that the handwriting of the 1910 census of the Sherman Institute in Riverside is simply attrocious. I did my very best to grab the info on all of our people. Steve------ you mention that "the last batch to be transferred are being filmed now". This raises some questions........ 1. Can you tell us where the original probates have been "transferred to"? What years were "transferred"? How long is the filming process to take? 2. Are there any original probates left at the courthouse- if so, what years? So, it sounds like when probate records are ordered from the courthouse, we will be getting a filmed copy- Both the courthouse and the library will have the same films to work with. What about an index? So for Bev's 1924 probate request for instance, she can obtain the documents either through a personal trip to Mariposa Library or it can be ordered through the courthouse-------in either case she will receive a copy of the *filmed* document- .25 a page at the library with a self search or .50 a page through the courthouse and they search. Appreciate your assistance in helping me getting these details all spelled out-------this information will be going to a "Mariposa research how-to" page for the website...... After we get the probate procedure clearly documented we can go on to other record types. Sorry if you got this twice, I don't open messages without an idenifiable subject so I am resending it in case you do the same. Steve Beverly, I don't know if Carolyn has answered your probate question. The library has or will have all probates from before the 1980's. I was told at the court that the last group to be transferred were being microfilmed now. If there is a 1924 Mariposa probate for your subject it is at the library now. If you post your subject and what you know about the death date and location I'll take a look later this week. Bye Steve
Beverly, I don't know if Carolyn has answered your probate question. The library has or will have all probates from before the 1980's. I was told at the court that the last group to be transferred were being microfilmed now. If there is a 1924 Mariposa probate for your subject it is at the library now. If you post your subject and what you know about the death date and location I'll take a look later this week. Bye Steve

Carolyn, would a probate from 1924 be at the library or Courthouse? Should money be sent with request? **Beverly
Does anyone have knowledge if any historic structures , or cemeteries were involved in the recent Burns Creek fire-in the Coulterville-Greeley Hill area.......... I was very sorry to hear that 43 structures were destroyed. 13 residences and 30 outbuildings. Current status--------- Mop-up in progress. No fire spread anticipated, however, potential for extreme fire behavior remains due to warmer, drier weather. Incident Command Team will begin turning management of the fire over to the local CDF Unit. Estimated “Control” date has been removed at this time to allow the Unit to set a date they are comfortable with. Thanks, Carolyn
Does anyone have any information on " the French Garden.".......... My reference is from an article in the MG about 1896- >>Mr. and Mrs. ARTRU who were conducting the hotel did not return from the French Garden till long after the fire was over. Thanks, Carolyn

Hi folks- The procedure for obtaining probates from the Mariposa Court House is to send a request to the courthouse- providing name and date of death------narrow DOD dows as close as possible. The have three indices to check. Cost is .50 cents per page. They do this on an "as time allows basis..."- Mail your requests to the Mariposa Court House P.O. Box 28 Mariposa , CA 95338 Old probates have been filmed and can be viewed at the library if you are coming to town.! Hope this helps. Best, Carolyn
