The link to historical buildings posted by Carolyn helped me find a photo of the IOOF Hall (Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne County), just days after learning my GG-Gparents (MECARTEA) were buried in the IOOF, Oak Grove Cemetery there -- not to mention all the other wonderful material available at that site, inc. for Mariposa County. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/hhhtml/hhGeographics6.html Much appreciation, jjastram
Hi Carolyn, Thanks for sending out that link! Perfect timing...I'm doing an historical perspective of Pilot Hill and one of the photos listed on the link is of the hotel that was operated and later owned by Mrs. Jane McLagan. The Bayley house photos (under Calaveras county) are ones I've never seen before. They are splendid. Bless you heart for taking and having the time to share all your juicy tidbits with us! Sue Silver El Dorado County
There are mentions of SOLARI, BRUSCHI, to be found in these records----------probably more- I just did a quick look.....as always the Library of Congress brings good things to the net! Carolyn =================================== The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) are among the largest and most heavily used collections in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. The collections document achievements in architecture, engineering, and design in the United States and its territories through a comprehensive range of building types and engineering technologies including examples as diverse as windmills, one-room schoolhouses, the Golden Gate Bridge, and buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. If you go to this site- it begins the entries for California- the information is divided by counties...........lots of nice photos of these buildings (b&w)-and further documentation http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/hhhtml/hhGeographics6.html Enjoy-Carolyn
Is this the fellow that wrote the will? (obit below submitted by Tom Hilk- thank you Tom!) I can link this will/probate information to the obit! That sound good! Carolyn ================= http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/maripoobitsA-F.html John Branson, Mariposa Gazette, December 2, 1905 submitted by Tom Hilk One of the early pioneers of Mariposa county, passed to his final rest last Monday at the ripe old age of 83 years.Mr. Branson was a native of Tennessee and his first residence in this county was at Phillips Flat near the Merced river in Hornitos district, where he resided for a number of years. He then located nearer Hornitos where he lived continuously for thirty-five years and where he died.Mr. Branson was married while a young man to the estimable lady who survives him. Ten children were the result of their union, nearly all of whom are now alive. Deceased was a kind husband and father, of a generous and hospitable nature, and a man who merited and claimed the respect of all. His death is sadly regretted. The funeral was held in Hornitos and the body was laid to rest in the I. O. O. you do amazing work Steve!!! This is John Sevier Branson I assume. d 24 Nov 1905 Hornitos, Mariposa Co, CA Married to Martha Ousley I'd just like to leave this message for those Mariposa Branson researchers. John is assumed to be the son of Thomas and Susan McGowan. The Branson lineage is such a challenge. The other Branson pioneer was Isaac Branson, son of Valentine. Valentine and Thomas were brothers...their father was Jarred/Jarret Branson, Sr.

Full article: http://www.mtdemocrat.com/columist/hughey27.shtml A bit of the article: An Indian footpath, the route facilitated commerce between the western-slope Miwok Indians and the Mono Indians on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada. The Miwoks traded acorns, berries, beads, arrows and baskets for the Monos' pine nuts, salt, obsidian, and robes made from rabbit and buffalo hides. Even today as a modern paved highway, the course of the road leading down from the pass is especially steep, winding and dangerous. During its early history as an automobile road, drivers were known to freeze at the wheels of their vehicles because the roadway was so narrow and precipitous. ( It might still be happening today----see my note below:-) ============== I am not going to tackle the Tioga- did the Kit Carson pass a couple of years ago! and I am not fond of the stretch of Hiwy 49 between Coulterville and Mariposa either. Thanks for the info. I already have the death/marriage info. I was looking for the probate information. Really appreciate it. Do you have my address? **Beverly
On yet-choo-nook's page it talks about being taken to the Indian School in Stewart, Nevada. I recently spoke to someone on the phone that had a first hand experience of being taken to Stewart. She said the native children were taken there on the advice of a local priest. She said my great-uncle Pete Hilliard accompanied them there.
Hello yet-choo-nook! I recently received a petition for Louisa Westfall Hilliard. On it, she stated her band was the Cassons. I was not familiar with this term so I was delighted to read your website! Sharon
I am pleased to tell you of a new Native American website- sent to me by researcher "Pat Murphy Brattland(Yet-choo-nook)" The surnames she wishes to add to the Mariposa Website Surname are page: Thurman Higgens Murphy, Sr. Thurman Higgens Murphy, Jr. Visit Pat's new website to learn more about her heritage. Also see the wonderful photos of the Indian baskets. http://www.gerlecreek.com/documents/dumnayokuts.htm Thanks for sharing this site with us Yet-choo-nook! Best, Carolyn
