This is exactly what is so very helpful to those with roots in Mariposa Co. and yet have no way of actually getting to do on-site research. I know exactly what this takes in terms of personal time, money, patience, eyesight & a good magnifying glass!! Not to mention a large bottle of Tylenol or Excedren!! Trying to decipher some of these documents is truly a challenge. Please accept my gratitude on behalf of the list for all your hard work... Sharon Mariposa, CA listmom & Kern Co Volunteer

    2. steven h miller
    3. Hi All, I posted a number of marriage transcripts last evening and have had questions already this morning and wanted to do some explaining. First, I have no family that I am searching for in Mariposa County, so the only files I have on the people I've listed is listed in the archives to this LIST and some are being posted a the Mariposa County site. I am always happy to discuss these people, but my knowledge may be limited. Second, these are transcripts. I go to the Hall of Records in Mariposa and request photo copies of the document, then I transcribe them at the counter and return them to the recorder clerk. They do not charge for this, the clerks there are helpful and friendly, however county regs require that if you want to take a copy with you they have to charge, the prices are changing now and I need to confirm them. I must return the photo copies an don't have any actual copies to share with researchers, Sorry. Third, I try to transcript completely handwritten documents, these usually don't follow a consistent format and I think that by comparison that the extent of the verbiage or the phraseology may have some significance. If the handwritten doc is particularly well done I may recommend the researcher order the doc from the county, I can't purchase them for you. In preprinted forms I only copy the facts. Fourth, I will publish my findings on the board or list that the request for help came from, also on the CAMARIPO-L and where applicatable CADI or Gold seekers. I will also ask the county web site to post in the proper category. I personally feel that the best way to make these formats work is to respond to them and to post findings on them. To take a message or request off-line hide the repose thread and does other researchers a disservice. Last, I do not charge for what I do, I feel that if you feel payment is necessary, I forward that to the local Friends of the Library who have so generously given their time and financial support to make the libraries in Mariposa and Oakhurst such enjoyable places to do research. In addition to the great people at the Mariposa Recorders office, I want to thank those in the Mariposa and the Oakhurst-Madera Libraries for their kindness, help and tolerance, Carolyn Feroben, this list mom and the Mariposa County web site etc for her chats and willing support in expansion of her on-line charges. There are more through out the California lists and web sites, all VOLUNTEERS. I GET WORDY SOMETIMES, but the more I get involved with this venue the more I have to say. HAPPY HUNTING, Steve

    3. This one was a preprinted form so I only record the facts. The handwritten ones seem to take a different twist of words every time and I sometimes think that the words might have clues, why that particular phrase or the omission of of a word, like holy. When you've read many by the same writer as I have there seems to be trends; the wordiest one I seen was Charles Pe and Chu Sin, appears that the writer went to extra length to validate the certificate, was this because he didn't do many certs for Chinese or ????? 1. [CAMARIPO] STAND PROUD
    2. Dear family, This needs to be shared and so I am......... This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America!

    1. [CAMARIPO] Home once again...
    2. Hello listers, I'm back from my trip to the east. Spent lots of time at the National Archives, Library of Congress and the DAR Library, as well as with two cute little grandsons!! I don't think I will ever exhaust the resources at the Archives!! Every time I go I think this will be the end of my visits and then I find a whole new area revealed that needs to be searched. It truly is one of my favorite places. I thought the same thing about the LOC. This time, I actually finished all I wanted from the LOC and now that I"m home, I find there are more references that I need to check from there. It's a neverending story........... I have an incredible list of lookups to catch up on and will begin working on it this coming week. If you have asked for a Kern Co. lookup, please be patient. I"m going to be spending long hours at the library and Hall of Records! Sharon Kern Co Volunteer & CAMARIPO listmom

    3. Hi , Teenie if you are on the list please be in touch! Does anyone have Teenies address- she may not be on the list anymore and I need her to contact me/ I have just received an email from a researcher. Here is a snipit of her note------------ -My grandmother was Mary Frances Deatsch who married Louis Harvy Grosjean, they lived in Mariposa at the time. Although Louis was born in California, his family were recent immigrants from Alsace at the time. My mother told me that her father was born in California but I have no idea where? My grandmother was raised in White Rock (born there too, I think). Louis mother's maiden name was Mary Sousa. I remember my mother specifically telling me that her name was spelled with an "s" instead of "z"... I recall that because I questioned it when she told me how the family spelled their name because I had never heard of that name spelled with anything other than a "z" prior to that. I also recall my mother telling me that her grandmother, Mary Sousa was a very small, petite, blonde lady. She was born in the Azores and immigrated with her parents -- traveled across country in covered wagon and settled in Mariposa. I know Mary Sousa married a Grosjean (don't know first name). I know that Louis had a brother by the name of John Charles Grosjean and that he held some sort of an office in the Mariposa County, and that he was well liked and highly respected in the community. ------------------------- Oh boy - do we have information on these families!
