    1. [CAMARIPO] Lost Family Members in Nevada
    2. steven h miller
    3. Hi All, I just spent a few days over the hill in Washoe country, while there I was reminded by a couple of historians and genealogists there that many of the first Euro/American settlers fell off the immigrant wagon trains that passed through and that the missing relation you now disappeared from the Eastern States, but can't find with their relations settling in California may have gotten off. Two places to start for those earliest lost souls are Genoa, in Douglas Co and Dayton, in Lyons Co. Genoa and Dayton, both squabble over being the oldest town in Nevada, were stopping points for wagon trains going over the California Trail south of Lake Tahoe. Both are near the state capital, Carson City which among other information sources has the Nevada State Library and Archives. The researcher at Genoa also reminded me that the early settlers and miners didn't care if they were in California or Nevada, she did a lot of research in Markleeville, Alpine Co, CA in the mountians above Genoa across the stateline, which if you check the map is closer to Nevada's cities than California's. Also a look up to the Oregon Trail. One family I've researched came that way to settle in California has had members of 3 different descendent generations go back to Oregon. The wagon train this family traveled with split into 3 groups, 1 going Oregon Trail, 1 California Trail and the last most famous the Donner Party across the Truckee River. For the researcher that can't find their 49'r after he is documented in California, a look in Washoe Co may find your lost relative. Gold finds in the Washoe country, though not rich led to the silver strike centered in Virginia City which was tremendous at a time when California had calmed down. The Comstock Lode brought tens of thousands from the California Mother Lode. Happy Hunting, Steve

    3. I have Anthony Fournier married into my family (Jones/Prairie). He was born 1884 in California and died in Mariposa County 1913. He had several children, one named Antone b. 1913. I haven't done very much on this line. Perhaps Anthony and your gr-grandmother were related. I will try and get to the State library this next week and do some census work on this family. As of now, I have only done the 1920 census. Will let you know what I find. **Beverly

    2. Hi, all! I'm looking for info on my great grandmother, Juanita FOURNIER, who was born in Mariposa Co. on 2 Jan 1876 or 1877. On her death certificate (5 Jan 1916 - Monterey Co.) it lists only her father as A. Fournier - no mention of her mother. I found an Atonio Fournia on the 1880 Mariposa Census. It's possible that this is Juanita's father. It appears that he could have been living in a mining camp - no mention of family. I was told that it would have been quite common for a man to leave his family in another town because the camps were quite crude. Does anyone know of this family or have access to birth records? Or, perhaps, have information on the mining camps of that time in that area? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated! Candice Henderson, NV

However, Steve tells me that what was being probated wasn't a will but an intestate estate. Therefore, the document wasn't written in 1922 (although that is the date of Hiram's death) but, in 1927. So the age of the son Hiram, was given as what it was in 1927, at the time of the writing of the document. Everything else dove-tailed beautifully. I knew there was something I was missing. My missing info was that this wasn't a will written by Hiram, Sr. and submitted for probate soon after his death. Hiram, Sr. died intestate and his widow was apparently trying to sell the land (or something similar) and couldn't until the estate was probated. Sharon, Listmom

    3. Was the will a transcript? If the age in the original was written "14" instead of fourteen, it is possible that the "4" was simply mis-read as a "9". I have seen this happen often enough (sometimes when trying to read my own handwriting!). - Mike

    1. [CAMARIPO] re Hiram W Branson probate questions
    2. steven h miller
    3. Hi Sharon, The Hiram W. Branson info you refer to was from the probate papers, he died "intestate" and in 1927 when the probate was filed with the Superior Court, the younger Hiram would have been 19 years. I don't know why the delay in filing, but I suspect that the widow Josephine wanted tosell the property, the only remaining asset and discovered that only probate would resolve the title. She moved to SoCal where she lived until death in 1937(?memory), her body was returned and interred at Mariposa Cem. I checked my copies, they are typewritten and readable throughout. The county death index book also uses the 1922 and the probate refers to the 1922 death, that probate finally closed in 1928. I have seen probates filed in 1917 for an 1897 death, again I think more out of ignorance than an attempt to de-fraud. Steve At 02:55 AM 09/19/2001 -0400, you wrote: Steve, This is way after the fact, but I have a question about the death date of Hiram Branson......... He would have only been 14 years of age. Since the will was probated in Dec of 1927, is it possible that Hiram died in April 1927? That would fit with the son Hiram's age as stated in the will. Judge of Superior Court, J.
