Dear Fellow Calvert Researchers: Chris Clark has established another line of the family, which descends from William Calvert of Chesterfield County, Va. Chris' line descends from John Butterworth Calvert, whereas hereto before the only lines traced were from John's older brothers Benjamin and William. Below is the text from pages 703 and 704 of "Descendants of Virginia Calverts" for WILLIAM CALVERT OF CHESTERFIELD CO., VA. Much of the research for this family line was by Miss Ruth V. Colvard, North Wilkesboro, N.C. Ruth Colvard was born Feb. 14, 1899; and is no doubt now deceased. The total text spans pages 703 to 719, it is the last chapter in the book. This line of the family was concentrated in the western part of Nrth Carolina and east Tennessee. I am publishing the first two pages since there is an interest in the Calverts in these areas. George Calvert [email protected] WILLIAM OF CHESTERFIELD CO., VA. FIRST GENERATION WILLIAM CALVERT OF CHESTERFIELD CO.. VA. 7901. William CALVERT (or COLVARD) b. . . . ; d. before Nov., 1745, Chesterfield Co., Va.; m. TEMPERANCE . . . . . .. She m. 2nd; . . . . Easeley. (It has been advisable to transfer this family from Book VII, its original number, to Book XVII. in order to indude the data in later generations. This necessitates making a third Index for this family alone.) It is possible that the above William Calvert was a son of John Calvet or Calvert to whom was granted 100 acres of land on the south side of James River in Henrico County, Va. 30th April, 1714, taken out of a survey of 258 acres surveyed for Mr. John Pleasants. (Land Grant Book 10, p. 125.) It is also possible but hardly probable that he was the William (No. 19), son of the Hon. William Calvert (No. 14) of St. Marys and Charles Counties, Maryland. William (No. 19), had a sister Elizabeth who married Charles Neal, Junior. William above (No. 7901) had a grandson named Neil or Neal Calvert or Colvard. Most likely this was but a co-incidence. >From Chesterfield County, Va. records: Nov. Court, 1745. Ordered that the Church Wardens of Dale Parish do bind out Benjamin Calvert and William Calvert, orphans of William Calvert. decd. according to Law. (Order Book Nov. 1737 -Oct., 1746. p. 341.) June Court. 1752. Ordered that Church Wardens do bind out according to law, Thomas Calvert orphan of William Calvert. Aug. Court, 1752. Thomas Calvert and William Calvert make choice of Temperance Easeley for their guardian. 1762. Dec. 25, John Butterworth Colvard and Judith Merryman married in Cumberland Co., Va. The wills of John Merryman Sr., and of John Merryman Jun., make no mention of Judith Colvard. She and her husband settled in Surry Co., N.C., where at least two records give his name in full. A John B. Colvard was recorded in the First Census for North Carolina, 1790. This John B. Colvard had Revolutionary service as a private in Blowns Company, NC. John Butterworth Colvard seems to have gotten his name from the only John Butterworth found in Virginia at that time, who left a will in York County dated May 15, 1742; probated Nov. 19, 1744; in which he mentions his wife Demaris Gibbons; daughter Mary Gibbons wife of John Gibbons; granddaughter Elizabeth Gibbons, oldest daughter of Mary and John Gibbons; granddaughter Deinaris Gibbons; son-in-law Thomas Brewer. There is nothing to indicate any connection with the Calvart or Colvard families, unless it be the name Demaris, which name is found among the children of William Cal-vert (Colvard), Jr. The Gibbons early wills were also searched but no mention of the Calvert or Colvard families. July Court, 1753, Chesterfield Co., Va., Benjamin Calvert was a de-fendant in a law suit. On a list of Revolutionary soldiers from Va., is the name of Benjamin Colvard. William Calvert or Colvard was living in Goochiand County, Va., when his children were born and were recorded on Douglas Register. From this Register have been taken the names, birth and baptismal record of his children. The name of his wife was given as Mercy Holland. The wills of both Michael and Judith Holland, mention, among others, their daughter Mercy. He next appears on the roll of the first Census (1790) for Wilkes County, NC., as does also his son William. One or the other was Justice of the Peace from about 1781 to 1790. As the son would have been young for that position, the compiler leans to the conclusion that it was the father who was the Justice. Only the sons name appears on the 1800 Census. ISSUE OF WILLIAM AND MERCY (HOLLAND) COLVARD: 7910 i. Elizabeth Colbard b. June 2. 1759; bap. June 16, 1759. 7911 ii. Neil Colbert b.
