Anyone interested in early English/American links and visiting Yorkshire should try and visit Kilpin the home until 1722 of the CALVERT family, The Lords BALTIMORE George Calvert 1580-1632 was the first Baron of Baltimore in the County of Longford in Ireland. He was the son of Yorkshire Roman Catholic gentry and as Sir George was a very influential man in England affairs as an M P and Secretary of State. He founded the colony of Maryland by sending in 1621/22 the first ships, some with North Yorkshire people, to settle there. There is a Calvert County in Maryland. Charles CALVERT 1699-1751, was the 5th Lord and the last to live at Kilpin. It then passed by marriage of his mother's second marriage to the CROWE family until 1818 and a Sarah Crowe married John Delaval CARPENTER the 4th Earl Tyrconnel. They had no issue and Kilpin passed to the line of the 1st Earl and a Walter Cecil TALBOT [ 1834-1904] son of the 18th Earl of Shrewsbury who changed his name to CARPENTER It ended with the daughter of his brother A C TALBOT, Bridget Elizabeth TALBOT [ 1885-1971] when it passed to the KILPIN Charitable Trust Well worth a visit.
