    3. The idea that Thomas Finch married Mary Calvert, daughter of William Calvert and Elizabeth Nodding, is, as far as I know, only circumstantial. Thomas & Mary named one of their sons Nodding and another William C, and also named one of their daughters Priscilla. Priscilla was a name in the Nodding family, perhaps an aunt or sister-in-law to Elizabeth, according to Loudoun and Fairfax Co, VA, records. Both the Finch and Calvert families show a clear trend of naming children after older relatives, so these children's names, being somewhat unusual, are definitely suggestive of a family connection. The Calvert and Finch families also followed the same geographical migration from Fairfax & Loudoun Cos, VA, to Washington Co, TN, and then to Cooper & Carroll Cos, MO. The Noddings and Finches both belonged to the Cherokee Baptist Church in Washington Co, TN, by 1783. All three families (Calvert, Nodding, Finch) appear in Washington Co records by 1786. Thomas & Mary's oldest surviving child appears to have been born around 1816, suggesting an 1815 marriage. Unfortunately, no such marriage is recorded in Washington Co records, though the Finches do not also seem to have been very big on properly filing government records. O'Gorman and various family records do seem to indicate that William & Elizabeth Calvert did have a daughter Mary, who married a Thomas Finch. In the 1920s and 1930s, when Thomas & Mary's grandchildren were still alive in Carroll Co, MO, it was "widely known" among the Finch family that Mary had been a Calvert, as evidenced by them collecting family records and contributing money to those fund-raising efforts to sue Maryland for the supposedly illegally appropriated land assets of the Calvert family in the city of Baltimore (whereby every Calvert descendant was going to become rich!). Supposedly there is a Calvert bible in the possession of the D.A.R. in Columbia, MO, which may say something about Mary's husband's name, but I have not seen it. Many of the Calverts and Finches belonged to the Big Creek Baptist Church in Carroll Co, MO, in the mid-1800s, according to church records. Thomas & Mary Finch, and many of their children, are buried in the cemetery of the nearby (but now vanished) Bethlehem Baptist Church. Somebody who visited there recently sent me these notes of what they found there: "A broken off stone lying flat face up in the grass half covered by grass: Mary Wife of Thomas Finch Born Feb 19, 1792 Died Nov 22, 1864 Next to Mary is a broken off stone lying face up buried under grass: Thomas Finch Born Oct 28, 1786 Died Sept 9, 1865" If anybody knows anything more, I hope they will respond! In the meantime, I guess we can each draw our own conclusions. (My thanks to Robert Fillerup for many of the basic research facts concerning the Nodding and Calvert families.) >Hi.... >I have a letter that quotes the "Illustrated Historical Atlas of Carroll >County Missouri" dated >1876.
