    3. (I am carbon-coping the list on this response as others may feel the way you do and I want to explain to everyone at once...) I agree that asking for personal responses will not help the list at all, but there is an exception in this case. All these that I am forwarding are copies of emails from OTHER lists and the chances that the originator of the email (not me, but the person listed in the "From" section under "Original Message" towards the top of the email) is actually a subscriber to this list as well is not very high. So, if you want your response to reach the originator of the email (again, not me personally, but someone from another list) you will need to send it to them personally, not to the list. Of course, you could always carbon copy the list if you wish to start a discussion on it here as well, as I suggest in this email... Both STEAD (abt. 1831) and MOORE (abt. 1838) were born in Yorkshire, England. Their children [all STEAD] are in the 1880 census (found in Ware County (SE) Georgia): Maie (May C) b. 1862 (census says Maine?) Clarene F b. 1864 in Ohio Walter DeCamp (Walter L) b. 1871 in Ohio Acquella (Aquila M) b. 1875 in Ohio Eugene Anson (Ujance A) b. 1876 in Ohio Jessie M b. 1879 in Ohio I do not know STEAD's parents/siblings. Mary Jane MOORE was d/o Joshua MOORE (7/10/1802-1/16/1881) and Elizabeth/Betsy CALVERT (12/23/1801-2/23/1876). Joshua's parents were Thomas and Hannah MOORE and Besty's parents, believe it or not, were also Thomas and Hannah CALVERT. I have approximate birth records for all 4 and death records for all 4. The families were from Birstall Parish, West Riding, Yorkshire. Joshua and Elizabeth/Betsy died in Sibley County, MN. A "spinster aunt" of theirs (I believe on Betsy's side) was Mary BOOTH, also Birstall-born. Mary was born 6/30/1796 and died in Sibley County, MN 2/13/1870. I have the cemetery transcriptions for all 3 in the Aspden Cemetery, Chanhassen, MN. What has me looking here in Butler, besides the marriage record for Samuel and Mary Jane, is that I stumbled across the record of "Booth STEAD" who fought for Ohio in the Civil War for the Union. He was born about 1841 in England, and I found him with wife Mary and 2 daughters living in Reily in 1880. The daughters were recorded as English-born (perhaps a first marriage?) The coincidence of names struck me. I have found a number of references to English-born STEAD, BOOTH and MOORE family members from the 1840-1870 timeframe in Butler County resources, and am trying to establish whether a connection to my families exists. The only other connection I have is that my grandfather, Samuel's grandson, born and raised in Atlanta, GA served his residency at a Cincinatti hospital in the 1930s, and then returned to Georgia. Everyone has heard of the Mason-Dixon Line. But did you know that you can walk to within a few feet of two of the originial markers? They sit along the Delaware-Maryland border, and both are easy to find. One is about 100 yards west of Delaware State 1 on Fedwick Island, right at the old Fenwick Island Lighthouse. The other sits a few miles west of the town of Delmar along Delaware State 54. The westernmost portion of the Mason-Dixon Line was used before the Civil War to refer to a boundary between slave states and free states. And since then, it has been used to arbitrarily distinguish the North from the South. But actually, the line, which forms the southern boundary of Pennsylvania and the boundaries between Maryland and Delaware, was surveyed for a far different reason. Its story goes back to 1682. In that year, a dispute arose between the Penn Family of Pennsylvania and the Calvert Family of Maryland. They had received grants to adjacent lands. But the description of boundaries between the two wasn't clear. Both claimed part of what is now the state of Delaware. Nearly a century later, the dispute was finally settled when English mathematicians Chas Mason and Jermiah Dixon surveyed the boundaries. The marker on Fenwick Isl is believed to have been erected in 1751. The other, put into place in 1788, marks the southwestern border of Delaware as it was drawn by Mason and Dixon. Both stones are worn from weather and time. But the carved Penn and Calvert coats of arms are still visible. (article from Southern Living Mag. Aug 1983 Pg. 13) Happy Thanksgiving. Gloria in MS
