My half-aunt, Paula Ruyle, died penniless in LA in 1959 and was given a charity burial in Resurrection Cemetery by the Count of Los Angeles. This I know because I have her death certificate and have talked to the cemetery. I'm trying to see what else I can find out about her, as she moved (and married) so often it's hard to keep track of her. If anyone can shed some light on some questions, I would certainly appreciate it! 1) Resurrection Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery. I've contacted the arch-diocese to find out if that meant she was Catholic, or whether they accepted some number of charity burials regardless of religion. I've been told that, especially since she was so poor, it's highly unlikely that any sort of notice or information was printed in the newspaper. Any suggestions where else to look? 2) The family story says she was last married to an oriental man who owned a restaurant, and as her death certificate gives her last name as "Lee", her marital status as "Divorced", and her last place of employment as "Lee's Restaurant", that seems plausible. LA county couldn't find any divorce records without a better idea what Mr. Lee's first name was. I don't know what her name was when she got married, as I don't know which of her many husbands Mr. Lee was. I am reasonably certain her last name at birth was Ruyle (or some spelling thereof), but I haven't been able to prove that (yet). Any suggestions how to find her divorce info? Assuming she married Mr. Lee in Los Angeles, she had moved to California in 1942, so the marriage and divorce would both be between 1942 and 1959. 3) At the time of her death, she lived at 1541 West Eleventh Place, City of Los Angeles, if that helps anything. Thanks for any and all suggestions! Chris Shearer Cooper chris at sc3 dot net
