The Chumash had a higher culture than the Gabrielinos but there is evidence that they got their religion from the Gabrielinos. They traded all the time and I'm not aware of any battles between them. The Chumash were in the area earlier and are ethnographically different. Their diets were very similar but I've never read that they were really closely linked.
