Until all of these images are indexed (which I believe is being done by volunteers) you have to go image by image and hopefully get lucky. There are some image records on the site that are more organized by year, by location, etc... and you can find some gems. I see that in addition to the birth and death indexes there are actual images of birth certificates at least up to 1930 as well as death certificates as recent as 1978. How I wish that all of my families were from L.A. county! I spent about 20 minutes looking through images and found my great-grandfather’s March 1948 death certificate. There were two categories for me to search: 1. San Joaquin Co., and 2. San Joaquin Co.-Stockton. Since I knew he died in Stockton I started in the second batch. But his certificate was in the the first batch. The images seem to be in sequence by number, but not necessarily chronologically by the date of death which is probably due to the fact that some certificates are filed more quickly than others and were numbered as they were received & recorded. So, if you know the location and date and have a little patience.......
