Jean, The passenger & crew list that you referenced at Ancestry.com is for the Vessel Athelviscount’s arrival at “Hawaiian Port” from Gensan Korea on April 11, 1938. He is listed on the manifest as Chief Engineer. His length of service at sea is listed as 21 years. The next image is a statement saying that the ship arrived in Hilo on April 17, 1938 and was expected to sail for Hull, England, on April 19, 1938 via the Panama Canal. I did a quick internet search and, according to the links below, the Athelviscount was hit and damaged by a German U-boat (U-202, Hans-Heinz Linder) on March 22, 1942. Perhaps they crossed the International Date Line which would account for the discrepancy in the date. http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/search.php http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/crews/listing.html?country=British http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/archive/index.php?t-3603.html There is also an image on Ancestry of an “England and Wales National Probate Calendar” that lists Mr. Iddon under “Wills and Administrations, 1942”. It says: IDDON, Clarence Hugh of 61 Manor-road Crosby Lancashire died 21 March 1942 at sea Administration Liverpool 22 September to May Iddon Widow. Effects £712 15s. I don't have Worldwide access to Ancestry as I have virtually no research in the USA. It seems we weren't a particularly adventurous family staying more or less rooted in Lancashire UK. Clarence Hugh IDDON is listed on the above list as leaving the UK.; He was in the Merchant Navy - a Chief Engineer. He is on the Commonwealth War Graves site as dying on the 21 March 1942 aged 49. It would appear that the ship he was on at the time - SS Athelviscount - was lost at sea. I'm wondering if this was the journey he was on when he lost his life.
