    3. California did not start keeping vital records at the state level until 1905. Many of the larger counties, however, began requiring vital records well before 1905. Los Angeles County, for example, has vital records dating as far back as the 1860s. For vital records prior to 1905, you will have to contact the recorder's office in the county where the event took place. There are no statewide vital records indexes before 1905.
